A TORY Brexiteer skewered European Union chiefs for their poor negotiating style saying the UK should refuse to commit to a Brexit divorce fee until a trade deal is properly discussed.
Owen Paterson said Britain should put “pressure” back on the European Union to discuss free trade and “not offer them a penny more”.
Theresa May is facing a massive rebellion and resignations from her government if she tries to push through a Brexit deal with a £36 billion divorce bill.
Mr Paterson, former Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, said in light of the EU’s £71.8 billion surplus with Britain last year, the UK should dictate negotiations.
Speaking on LBC, he added the UK should not fear adopting World Trade Organisation rules as it would boost global trade.
Mr Paterson said: “I’m very clear we should offer not a penny more until they do seriously talk about a free trade arrangement.
“Obviously for everybody, for them particularly to have this massive surplus with us of £71.8 billion last year.
“You want to have reciprocal free trade and zero tariffs, that’s the ideal destination. But until we get to serious talks about that, I wouldn’t offer them a penny.
“I think we should put the pressure back on them. Because they flatly refuse to talk about free trade and they keep insisting on talking about secondary issues first, we should say unless you will come to the table properly, we should assume we’re going to WTO terms.

This is all nonsense, this would be a global trade deal, the terms on which we trade with the rest of the world, the terms on which America and India, for instance, trade into the European Union at a far more successful rate than we have done from with inside a single market ourselves.
«That would give all those involved, everybody, industry, truckers, customs, everybody, time to set themselves up and make the necessary possible arrangements.
«The clock is ticking away, we’ve wasted October, we’re going to lose November and I personally would not offer a penny until they sit down and really talk about trade.
«Because it’s massively in their interest. The Germans sold us 950,000 cars last year. Deloitte have done a report that if we do go to WTO rules and if we raise tariffs, they lose 18,000 jobs in South Germany alone.»
The UK’s angry backlash against a massive divorce bill was fueled by European Commission’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier on Monday, who said Britain could have no access to single market benefits and British banks could not have any passporting rights.
The insult to Britain came as the Prime Minister chaired a meeting of her Brexit “war cabinet” to discuss increasing the offer to the EU with pro-Remain Chancellor Philip Hammond said to be pushing for a £36 billion divorce bill.
Mr Barnier’s words have strengthened the hand of pro-Brexit MPs who argue that there is no point in trying to get a deal with the EU.
Last night senior Tory MPs were lining up to warn Mrs May that she needs to quit the talks and prepare for World Trade Organisation rules which will hurt the EU more than Britain and mean Brussels “will not get a penny” from Britain.

Instead of doubling her original offer Theresa May should halve it. Then tell them it gets halved again each week until you start serious trade talks.
So she's going to pay £40 billion pounds for something we don't have to, it's illegal to pay divorce bill, watch tomorrow budget cutting armed forces etc walk away and if uk struggles for abit the £40 billion will come in handy
