Been having this problem on and off, but now it seems like it is occurring all the time. Car will not rev past 5,000 RPM.. hesitates and stutters like it is hitting a rev-limiter.

Specs:
M42 1.8 Liter DOHC 4-cylinder
Coil-on-plug kit with new wires
New Spark Plugs
New Injectors
New Cam Position Sensor
New OEM O2 Sensor
AMSOIL Synthetic 5w-40 Motor Oil
K&N Air Filter
Mark D 93 Octane Chip
Removed the «mess under the intake»
Running 93 Octane Fuel always

Needless to say, the engine has had almost every maintenance item serviced and replaced by me. If there is anything I have missed, please feel free to add suggestions or ask questions.. I really want to figure this out!

  1. @BeamerE30318i Thanks for the response.. I am hoping the cams are not the problem. I had the valve cover off to replace the gasket about 4-5 months ago and the cams looked great.. the only thing that even looked potentially bad were the cam sprockets for the timing chain, but, but even those weren't that bad. I'll post back on here once it's resolved.

  2. Yes, Mark D 93 octane chip. Tried a different ECU with stock chip, did not help.

  3. In this case, the problem started intermittent, so we can't agree thet is a mechanical problem, right?

  4. The problem was a faulty CRANKSHAFT position sensor. Car now runs excellent. Thanks all for your help. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask on this video. Hopefully this will help others.

  5. I just got my e30 its a 1991 318i and it wont let me rev passed 4 1/2 and nothing in the car has been modified, everything is stock, I was wondering if there is some sort of rev limiter on it or something like that?

  6. I would take a man's life to have that idle

  7. If it isn't the CPS (crankshaft not cam) it most likely would be your PCV valve in other terms crankcase ventilation system valve or oil ventilation system which basically takes your fumes from oil to gas and recycles it to your engine . Its a vacuum thing. That's why your engine misfires or hesitates. How to know ?! Open your motor oil cap and if it sounds like a can of Pepsi when opening (sound of released pressure) that's how you would know if that's your pcv . I'd check injectors as well.

  8. +nairbtits your about right! I personally realized the difference in the magnets, too. But mines turned out to be o2 sensor. Adding to that ,I took off my coolant temperature sensor and it has some black residue on it and it wiped off pretty easy and put it back in and it's sound was back to normal while trying to crank it up . Not the rich ugly sound it made before . Just now , all I need is nice jump battery …. went dead (not original)

  9. this happens to me I've been driving my 95 touring manual swap around and since I swapped it it's been 5k can't remember where it was when it was auto going to try my buddy's dme then I'll look at fuel issues.. how to check cps?

  10. Thx man. My m40 engine have the same problem.. It passed 5k rpm after hasitating in that rpm range… Btw how much it cost?

  11. My friend bought a 318i yesterday. I drove it home and it has the same problem with not getting over 5k rpm 😛

  12. I may have the same issue as your car had. I have a M42 1991 Convert and the car backfired and quit. Thought I was dealing with a fuel issue, but replaced that and still no go. What all needs to come off in order to remove the crankshaft position sensor? Did you Ohm it out or just replace it?

  13. I have a 318i with the M40 engine and when in neutral the car will rev all the way to the redline but when driving it will Rev to 5k-5.5k depending what level terrain the car is on could this be a faulty CPS?

  14. i have a bmw 320 e36 same problem will check the crankshaft sensor

  15. i have a similar problem. if it is due to faulty crank position sensor, then you won't be able to fire up. my car injects lots of fuel but would not rev past 5000 at high gear. there is no power and cant accelerate. it idles and shakes badly during cold start but once warm it is fine. in all situations, there is lack of power.

  16. My '91- 318i, E30, M42 is having the same problem at 3,000 rpm you had like rev limiter. Did your is throw any Codes. Mine shows a 1244 code which is camshaft position sensor. replaced Camshaft Position Sensor with OEM it still hesitates and bucks especially around 65-70 mph range. The Crankshaft Position sensor had already been replaced by a non-OEM brand. Do you think The Bosch replacement CPS is the way to go to fix this and do I need any special tools or measurements? This problem has stumpped 2 BMW Mechanics.
