MG 48 — Volvo S40 Timing Belt Replacement

My volvo S40 has what’s called an intereference design engine, basicly what this means is that if the timing belt were to break the valve would stop moving and would hang in a position that would «interfere» with the pistons path of travel. It wouldn't really be an 'oops pardon me while I squeeze by' type of interference it would be possible broken piston heads and bent and broken valves. Thus it's recommend that the timing belt is replaced ever 100k miles, well right now I’m over 120k and I’m nervous to say the least. My dad was kind enough to help me out(did most of the work) and we got it done.

  1. Replacing the belt was just preventative maintenance, both the engine and the belt were still working okay at the time, but if the belt were to break there's a good chance it could ruin the engine. Since the car had 130k miles on it it was due to be replaced

  2. Good video Marty. liked the tip with screw drivers, took my time today(5 hrs) replaced a few other things. The tension pully adjustment could have been discused a bit more, but I most likely would not have done this job without seeing it first. thanks bud!

  3. @hodge2112 awesome man! Glad We could help you out!!

  4. I disagree. It's not actually showing anything. Where does it say to jack up the vehicle? Where does it say to remove the aux belt (or show how?), Where does it show HOW to remove the belt cover?

It's just a running commentary working around the other bloke who's doing things but explaining nothing!

The timing is already locked but you don't explain how to do it. Did you align TDC?

    It's just chatter.

  5. What year S40 is this? Just picked up a 97 2 litre and it's lovely but came with no service history so I have a bad case of Cambelt Paranoia.

  6. Getting a used s40 2003, 154k. I checked the carfax but no record of change. How can you know by looking at it if it needs changed? I heard that finger nail marks on serpantine belts can tell you or something like that. Is it the same for this?

  7. @alan933 I have a 2000 S40 and I've just changed the T/B last week. I'm told by the mechanic that it needs to be changed every 55k miles (not very long IMO), so if there is no record of change it would be advisable to have it done. For the record my vehicle had 160k when I bought it, it has 171k now. Sometimes there is a marking on the belt or else a written label on the engine cover saying when last changed. Other than that a Volvo dealer/mechanic could tell you.

  8. @alan933 see my reply below. thanks

  9. thanks, i have the same exact car. I'll be starting my project for the timing belt/water pump tomorrow!

  10. my 1999 s40t4 has 194000 on the clock may be a good time to change mine i think

  11. hey I have a question, for your dad I guess since he did all the work lol jk. but seriously I wanted to know abouthe the engine and "mostly " the interfere" feature, Im in the process of buying a used volvo for cheap and I the reason why its so cheap is because it the time belt and tensioner may have been broken and I wanted to know is it workth it to get and fix it up like you did or do you think since the it broke that it could internal damage? thanks for post your video really helpful

  12. Just got an s40 and have a few issues with it. One was the thermostat and stripped torx bolts and the other is the timing belt was replaced but not properly timed. Took it to a shop and they said it was slow and would cost just as much to fix it as it would to replace it ($300-$500). Is estimate high or about right?

  13. one of the bearings on a gear in the timing assembly in my Volvo station wagon 😛 my current project

  14. Great video. I am having a really hard time with the timing belt. Do you have any issues putting in the new one? If so any hints to help me out.

  15. Nice DIY… im looking at buying one of these cars as a commuter w/ 140k and im hoping this has already been done. I typically do TB WP at about 90k as preventive maintenance. Had a TB break before and its not nice!

  16. I need to know what year this Volvo is. Please!

  17. Is this a 2000 Volvo? Because I think I need to change the water pump in mine and the Haynes manual I have says I need to install a lifting beam and hook; because the engine mount needs to come off. Can you help me please? Thanks!

  18. great job on the timing belt/water pump replacement. definitely best to do both at the same time. and fyi, bomba de agua is the same thing as water pump in Spanish, and correa de sincronización/cadena de distribución is how you say timing belt/timing chain.

  19. um….ah……um..um…..and your done.

  20. er…um….der…timing belt….um…er…der…water pump…and here's this…and that's how you change a timing belt!

  21. Was your waterpump malfunctioning or did you replace it as a precautionary measure?

  22. here in norway price for shifting this is 1000 usd, just came from workshop

  23. I wanna replace the timing belt, but I worry about the cam pulleys dropping out of sync, and the crank pulley doing the same. what do I do to ensure they are in the correct location?

  24. i like this video … i got a 2002 s40… and it helped me a bit…

  25. volvo 2004 v40 — changed it on 60k coz it broked down. then changed it!
total 600$ with particles + labor! (in new york city)

  26. You forgot the part about rotating the engine/cams to the timing marks first. This is a lousy video, shows nothing, and is dangerous to the uninformed. Wedging the cams with screwdrivers is stupid when the right answer is so easy.

  27. Question…was this timing belt issue causing your check engine light to go on??

  28. It looks like the engine has an exhaust VVT cam. If so did you address the issue of preloading the cam? I did not see any reference to that.

  29. It will not "destroy" your motor. It will probably bend a few valves which are easy to change. But having said that, it is easy enough to change the belt to prevent this.

  30. go and get your diploma for a video recording and after come and talk about car

  31. donde se conecta la manguera de humo del motor

  32. I had purchased a 2007 S60 because the engine has the timing chain. I do a lot business traveling and didn't want the headaches and $$$$$$$ that comes with changing the timing belt additionally, the water pump on the S60 is external/outside the engine. A big money saver if the pump fails.

  33. Terrible video, don't watch this if your actually trying to fix your car.
