Hi

Today I test the EV range on the motorway, doing 110km/h or 68 miles. How far can I go ?

Enjoy and feel free to comment and subscribe 🙂

  1. Thanks once again for the info on this car. Close to leasing one. Info is VERY helpful!

  2. Thank you for your the very informative videos on the Niro.
Do you know how much cheaper it is pr km running ev-mode compared to hybrid? Do you save anything or is only green consciousness to gain.

  3. Thanks for the update! One of the dealerships nearby here finally has one in inventory. Will go tomorrow to test drive. I think that was pretty good range for winter time and highway speeds. I imagine it will only get better in the summertime on the stock tires. I do more city driving so I wonder what that range will be like!

  4. Thanks to Chris for the invitation.

I'm the guy with a Golf GTE, and I'm also looking forward to a comparison of the two cars.

They are comparable in price in Denmark, but otherwise there are quite big differences.

Eg. the engine power seem to belong to cars from two different price ranges:

Niro: 60 hp electric motor, 105 hp petrol engine, total output 141 hp, total torque of 265 Nm.

GTE: 102 hp electric engine, 150 hp petrol engine, total output 204 hp, total torque of 350 Nm.

It will be completely unnatural to drive a GTE in the same way that a Niro is to be driven. A GTE is making use of rapid acceleration, where Niro should be driven fairly carefully if the petrol engine is not to start for help. So no one can believe that a GTE will in practical use run as far in EV mode as a Niro. A GTE accelerates to 100 km/h in EV mode, as fast as Niro does in "Sport mode" with both engines.

It can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxRptqAOt7E

It is therefore not interesting to make comparisons of acceleration and peak speed.

The interesting thing will be how much the difference is in reach in EV mode if the two cars run the same line at the same speed and with the same accelerations along the way without the Niros petrol engine running. Battery capacity and weight are close to being the same, but a bit in Niros favor. Of course, Niro will drive the longest, but how much longer? It will be interesting to see.

In addition, we can look at the advantages and disadvantages of the two cars.

I might also have an opportunity to tell why I did not choose a Niro. I can give a hint: I probably buy a plug in hybrid to be able to run without the gasoline engine starting. Do You think, that I want to be forced to slow accelerations in an unheated car? 😉

  5. I got my Niro PHEV this Friday and drove 44km on EV mode on 70-90 km/h. One thing I noticed now is that your dash screen doesn't look the same as mine. I have the range on the left part. Is that something drivers can customize or is it different in Denmark and Sweden?

  6. Thanks for all your usefull videos, greets from Spain 🙂

  7. With such low fuel consumption, what are your thoughts on using a fuel stabilizer?

  8. Chris are you driving on 16" or 18" wheels ? There is quite a difference in consumption.

  9. Have you considered trying out the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? It has 12kwh Drive battery and rsted at 45km range.

  10. Based on my experience with the Chevy Volt the electric car is less efficient in colder weather and higher speeds. Excellent videos thank you for the conversion is miles per hour. Greets from California.

  11. Exactly what I was looking for….thanks!!

  12. Hyundai ioniq can ride about 60 km only on ev mode, why kia niro rode only 30 I can’t understand..(

  13. Interesting video you went 19 miles, I think in the US they rate this car at up to 26 miles EV range.
So it's not too far off considering the circumstances.
Does this car have a hold feature where I could charge the car at the house, run it on the gasoline engine until I got back into a city environment so as to not use the battery at all or very little on the interstate highway

  14. 68 mph is wasteful. 63 mph is more efficient with little time difference for the distance driven locally. The myth of speeding everywhere is that, myth. 10 miles@70 vs.60 “saves 60 seconds!! It’s 10 mph difference, very small! Try it!
