  1. Nissan kept the straight 6 RB26DETT engine in their R34 GTR GT500 untill midway through the 2002, when it was replaced by the new 3 liter V6 VQ30DETT engine.
This shorter V6 engine was able to be mounted further back into the chassie and improving weight distribution and put more weight the rear wheels, which improved traction which was lacking in the earlier models, since the GTR could only in rwd form and with no 4 wheel steering due to the rules.
Toyota swapped their 4 cylinder 3S-GTE based engine for a naturally aspirated 3UZFE V8 with a 180 degree flat plane crankshaft in 2003, in order to get more torque, the engine was initially bored out to 5.2 liters, later reduced to 4.5 liters in 2004 due to new rules about air restrictors.
