   I bet it's your Idle air control, yesterday I replaced my boot and it's still doing the same thing just not as bad

   if you replace maf you can't use the china brand you have to buy oem as far as finding lean codes you need a smoke test I have a 318i 1997 and idles rough too . you have the m52 engine if I'm not mistakeing check your ccv and pcv too those hoses get old brittle and can cause oil build up too causing issues had a 528i e39 it was hell trying to find out what was wrong with it until I started watching NathanDIY on Youtube check out his channel might help you Good Luck on the Drift Build bro
