DW8 Diesel hammering noise on cold start, diagnosed & fixed.

1.9 / 1.9D / DW8 Diesel (Citroen Dispatch / Peugeot Partner / Fiat Scudo) rattle / clatter / hammering on cold start.

Fault was found — needle lift sensor on injector #1 was faulty. Replacement injector #1 (flywheel end) cured the problem.

I first removed the serpentine belt to exclude alternator, power steering pump & serpentine tensioners, none of these were the source of the noise. I then took the van to http://fuelinjectionservice.co.uk/ they diagnosed & fixed it. Needle lift sensor on injector #1 was faulty. Replacement injector #1 (flywheel end) cured the problem.

  2. vérrifi you electric connection;mine was endomagé its my couté 250 euro;surtou has fixation at the botton of the pump ring that he (she,it) degrades,,scudo fase 2 et 3

  3. would anyone know why my Citroen dispatch is not revving up at all, i changed the throttle position sensor and checked the cable and still no use…it runs at a constant high rev…any ideas

  4. @nginmu Thx so much i was having the same problem but not so often, this week i changed the sparks and realized that the air admission is so dirty in the first piston. Now with your info i think i have the same problem.

    I got this Partner (DW8) too, and sadly the same problem (exactly the same noise on cold start, then it begins to decrease), now… how did you know the injector number 1 was faulty???, i understand the scanner does not detect this.

  7. My 1999 Peugeot Expert had exactly the same symptoms: loud hammering / nailing, at any engine temperature, not only cold start.
    It was a faulty injector #2. After that was fixed, the engine ran smooth and quiet again.

  10. You absolute total STAR! That's the EXACT noise my 'Pla is making, thought it might be injector and it's leaking diesel around the injector base so it's the seal. Top, top star. £4.50 fix and now I have the confidence as it's making the identical noise. Terrific.

  11. no I have the same problem its the throttle sensor/ throttle valve just beneath the throttle cable that is causing that sound..

    when you get back change the oil filter and oil…..right as rain 🙂

  17. inyector 4 con sensor de elevación de aguja verificarlo que este funcionando y este conectado correctamente, si esta bien entonces retrasa un poco la bomba inyectora, flojando 3 tornillos 13 del piñon, y moviendo para atras el de el centro, si eso no funciona busca diferencias de presión en cada cilindro, si eso no funciona, verifica los inyectores, y si eso no funciona busca un bombero… 

  18. Hi, I had the same problem, tried changing the needle lift sensor c/w injector holder but to no avail. The only difference that I noted was that on startup, when the vehicle was sufficiently warm, the engine is silent for bout 10secs, then the usual orchestra begins and after the car warms up to 90deg, the noise reduces significantly. Anyone know how I can be helped?

  20. Bonjour,J'ai les mêmes problèmes sur une Citroen berlingo de 2003. Claque fort, baisse de puissance (on cale facilement au démarrage). Mon injecteur pilote (celui avec le capteur de levée d'aiguille) semblait HS il avait une résistance de 123 Ohms au lieu de 106 + ou — 4 Ohms. Je l'ai remplacé par un neuf, qui a bien 106 de résistance. C'est pareil, le moteur claque toujours de la même façon…I have same problems on a Citroen <berlingo de 2003. I replaced the injector number (flywheel side). And the problem is still there…Anybody has an Idea?

  21. it's your timing advance solenoid sticking mate. put a litre of oil in the diesel to lubricate it a bit and if it dosent cute it replace it. get this issue in work all the time

  22. Noiae is caused by not enough diesel firing. Its either an injector ir a fuel supply issue I have a 1.9 d xu pug. I changed the fuel filter then it started doing this I took out filter and threw it away. Priblem stopped To compensate. I put on a £1 inline fuelFilter. Runs sweet now

  23. Had the same thing this week! I FIXED IT BY REPLACING INJECTOR ONE (THE ONE WITH THE WIRE)  I hope this helps. I tried loads of other things first like fuel additives for sticking injectors etc. Just go and buy a recon or second hand injector one (with wire) and it'll fix it.

  24. its the cold start advance selonoid on front of fuel pump. lucas cav pump. some earlier ones have them on the back of pump. they cost £360 from peugoet but will get from diesel specialist for around £60ish. i have changed piles of these. just screw out and in with old one and plug in wire. job done!

  25. Hi I have the same problem I have changed the advance solenoid sensor. And the hammering is still there. It has only started after I have changed the alternator and belt and pulleys very annoying. Thanks

  26. I have a 2003 1.9 peugeot partner diesel that starts and runs fines until you turn it off again and when you restart it it runs rough and white smokes pours from exhaust anyone have any ideas please whats wrong
    Things i have tried
    1 temperature sensor replaced
    2 injectors tested

  27. Firstly I advise you to check all four steel injector pipes for fractures or cracks even though there appears no diesel leaks. The slightest drop in pressure from Pump to injector can cause this noise. Actually take them all off and replace them with new from around 40 pounds for a set and you can do yourself without much hassle. A 17mm spanner is all that's required. For slightly easier access remove oil trap and air filter box. Should all come off in one peice using just a screw driver. Good luck.
