Car New | Volkswagen unveils Tiguan, Atlas in Detroit while touting commitment to North America
While showing off its new Tiguan and Atlas R-Line, Volkswagen on Sunday hyped up its commitment to North America as it seeks to regain customers’ trust after the diesel emissions scandal.
The German automaker debuted a new Tiguan and Atlas R-Line SUV, in a pair of Detroit auto show debuts clearly aimed at the American audience.
The U.S. Tiguan comes in a stretched-out new version that measures 10.7 inches longer than last year’s model, and 4.4. inches longer than the brand-new European model.
The all-new Atlas R-Line will be a «strong player in the U.S.,» said VW North America CEO Hinrich J. Woebcken.
He said the German automaker plans to offer a more «family-friendly» line in the midsize and compact SUV sector.
Some of the changes to the Atlas include 100-cubic-feet of cargo space, and seating for seven adults as the third row comes with a new «innovative» folding system. Woebcken highlighted its comfortable yet sporty appeal as he offered details on features such as stainless steel pedal covers.
Woebcken said in the news conference at Detroit’s Garden Theater that the Atlas will start at a base price of around $30,000 and will come in at $48,000 for the fully loaded version.
Woebcken said. «The Atlas is proof that we are taking this market super serious,» «We are here to stay.»
