Audi A4 MOT Failure Repair — Split CV Boot Replaced & Brakes Serviced

In 2015 I met Mrs Jon Coupland, we were both young, beautiful and single It’s that age-old tale, boy meets girl, girl meets boy, boy drives a K11 Micra. Girl thinks it’s naff. So boy went out and bought a 2000 Audi A4 B5 Saloon 1.6 Petrol … that will impress the ladies right? … Well Kinda.

This A4 replaced my K11 Micra as my daily driver and I put 50,000 miles on it in 5 years. But then I realised that this car needed to be retired into the Coupland Collection, and so there it sat, preserved. Rarely used.

MOT expired in March 2024 and I was confident all would be ok — MOT booked, all was NOT ok.

In this video Dad and I get the car up and running and give it a Pre MOT Test once over. New suspension arms replaced, a CV boot that has eaten itself and a few niggly bits here and there. Will it pass an MOT … at the moment.
No

The split CV boot is replaced and the sticky brakes are eased off.

£16 for the Febi Bilstein kit (Part number 15842) https://www.partsinmotion.co.uk/car-parts/transmission/cvboot/febi-cv-joint-boot-kit-front-outer-15842-detail

  1. I had no idea my car had any CVT boots 😮

  2. I had to do this very job on my 2003 Volvo XC90 (same corner). While fixing an ABS problem. I found a small tear in the outer CV boot letting out the grease. I elected to remove the driveshaft and to dismantle the outer CV joint to clean it.

  3. Well done Jon and Pete a great repair as ever and will make an massive difference to how it drives all the best Daniel

  4. 21:57 Copper grease on the hub face, a very thin smear really helps to prevent alloy wheels seizing. Being stuck on a hill in the Pennines with a flat tyre in the middle of winter with a car only ever serviced by the main dealer taught me that lesson. A big rubber hammer and the repeated kicks of the recovery driver did absolutely nothing, so I had to drive it some distance with slightly loose wheel nuts and lots of rapid side to side steering wheel movement to get it to move.

  5. I like how your dad dosent swear 2 much even with some of the complycations that he encounters you are both brill at this

  6. Great work "dad" Audi looks much better now.

  7. That gaiter kit was really good value, but the material these days seems very different to the soft rubber boot that came off the car, any comments from Mr Coupland Sr about changes over the years ? Makes you wonder how long they are supposed to last these days, even with a respectable German sounding brand name.

That’s a nice understated effective efficient Audi…. a real oddity these days !
