@elli0t2t New cars are made to make money for the industry. My 20 year old car gets 25 mpg (combined), has traveled from Columbia, SC to Eau Claire, WI (halfway across the country) and back, cost me $500, and has cost me about $4,000 in restoration and maintenance in the three years I've had it. Did I mention it has a steel bumper with rubber wrapped all around the vehicle? It was built properly. New cars are flakes of debris waiting to happen, that cost too much. That's my two cents.

That is possible but It has to be two cylinders that are up at the same time. The system is only active under low loads (up to 4000 revs and 75 Nm) so there is not much more wear and allowing 1 and 4 to be shut off would cost more and add more weigth.

Thats because all cylinders are connected together.
No , if the exhaust valves staid always open , the cylinders that are deactivated would suck exhaust gasses from the manifold
