Hold on to your Bathurst mug – the Kia Stinger GT will use its 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine to accelerate as quickly as the Holden Commodore SS with a 6.2-litre atmo V8. If anticipation for Kia’s first-ever rear-wheel-drive sports sedan (no, it won’t use the SS tag) wasn’t already lofty enough, then the South Korean brand has just dropped its initially communicated 0-100km/h acceleration claim by two-tenths to a bloody brisk 4.9 seconds. Kia Stinger GT rearWith 276kW and 510Nm, the Audi A5 Sportback-style five-door liftback will become the quickest car that Kia has ever produced. The local division of the brand has also indicated the vehicle will arrive here in September priced from around $50,000 plus on-road costs. Although less interesting 188kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 147kW/440Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel versions will likely make it to market, all will send drive only to the rear wheels. Kia Stinger GT sideAustralian car enthusiasts lambasted Holden for its decision to rebadge an Opel Insignia as the 2018 Commodore, partly for so heavily borrowing from a German design (where both vehicles will be produced), but also for ditching rear-drive for front- and all-wheel drive. The range flagship will be a 230kW/370Nm version of the existing 3.6-litre V6 GM engine. By contrast, Australian car enthusiasts have seemingly embraced Kia’s decision to produce a relatively affordable twin-turbocharged, rear-drive large sedan-like vehicle. Indeed, the Stinger GT was revealed at the Detroit motor show in January to rapturous applause from website and Facebook commentary the world over.Kia Stinger GT frontKia can keep performance rear-drive family cars alive, it seems, but GM and Holden can’t? Or is there more to it than that? The proof will be in the driving when Commodore V6 AWD meets Stinger GT in a comparison that couldn’t have been imagined only a decade ago.

The AMG GT roadster comes in two versions: There’s a standard GT, rated at 469 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque; it charges from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 3.9 seconds and tops out at a governed 188 mph; above that, AMG is launching a new power and equipment level, the GT C, which sits above the GT S but below the GT R versions of the coupe. (Mercedes is mum on the subject of a GT C hardtop.) The GT C roadster makes 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque, it’s said to hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and the governor is reprogrammed to 196 mph. We suspect AMG wants to save the 200-plus-mph software for a Black Series version, which is sure to hit showrooms eventually. All AMG GT models are powered by the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, internally code-named M178. The roadster sits atop the same chassis that forms the basis of the remarkably capable AMG GT coupe. The GT C further adds to its capabilities by fitting a number of enhancements that surpass even the GT S coupe, because they’re taken from the GT R. They include rear-wheel steering, which turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels at lower speeds, and in the same direction at 62 mph and above, to enhance agility and high-speed stability.The GT C roadster also comes with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, whereas the regular GT roadster lacks that feature. The gearing of the GT C’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is revised, and the drive mode selector offers an additional Race mode. A lithium-ion battery saves valuable pounds. And perhaps most obviously, the AMG GT C roadster is wider—by a whopping 2.3 inches. The wider rear track enables cornering-enhancing wider tires, and it lends a distinct look to this most extreme of AMG roadsters. Up front, both the roadsters are fitted with the new Panamericana grille first seen on the GT R. It is part of a front fascia that includes active aero elements. Eventually the GT and GT S hardtops will receive the new front end as well.
