@edkwon Great buy! I had to replace one of mine though. $100 used form a 740iL.
How many miles you have on yours? Like it?
@RyanKnowsTech I picked up mine with 79K on the odo, love it so far, I have a used E36 M3 as my DD so I want to keep the miles low on the M5 for now. Plan to update the HU, and lights to the facelift version
@edkwon Very cool! I just started a channel where I intend to make videos about the car, and the upgrades I plan to do to it. If you're interested in joining my 'forum' or 'board' like community, please subscribe to @E39Source.
Thanks 🙂
Hey guys, thanks for watching! I have created a channel dedicated to the E39, @E39Source. Please subscribe if you're interested! I have many videos to come. I hope to make it like a video-based online forum about and for E39 (and similar) BMW models and their service, parts, upgrades, and maintenance. Thanks!
I love BMW
The marks on the wall are from accelerating the m5 parked in reverse? WIN
this car is pretty good i would loved to have it, but the mpg kind of kills me, what is mpg on this m5? because i ownt 1994 325i and i get like 28 mpg highway, and about 21 mpg city
@aLex0kain I seriously get a solid 20 city and 25-28 highway. That's not driving it hard, but not driving it like a Buick either.
@Shahabk818 Why? I have 157,000 now, and I've had no major problems.
@Shahabk818 I have had a few sensors and pumps need to be replaced, but that's expected. I'm having spark plugs and O2 sensors done right now, which is expensive, but that is general maintenance on these cars. I have done A LOT of work cleaning this car up, both inside and outside since this video. Please check out my new channel all about the car, @E39Source.
@RyanKnowsTech say whaaaaat?? thats seriously almost double the window sticker estimate….
I love these cars. Yours is very nice, I'll be picking up my own in a few days and I can't wait. It's a 2001 in LeMans Blue. with 88,000 miles on the clock. She's in mint shape!
@328iKid Thanks! I've put a lot of money and work into mine since this video. Around $15,000 actually. Lots under the hood, and interior refreshes. Please check out my channel about the car, @E39Source. I have a video soon talking about all the work under the hood I've done over the past month.
Congrats on the purchase, you'll love the car! BTW the LeMans blue is possibly the best color for these cars!!
@RyanKnowsTech That's great, the mod bug is a wonderful thing! I'll too be doing a few things and have subscribed to your E39Source channel! I can't wait to have it in my garage. I've always loved BMW cars, they're amazing machines. And the E39 M5 is tied with being my dream car with of course another BMW model, the E46 M3. But I'd rather have the M5 for the fact it is much more reliable. I'll have video up of the beast once I have it in my possession.
@328iKid Thanks for subscribing, let me know when your video is up!
Thinking about buying a 2000 BMW M5 with 90K miles on it. Anything to look for or be concerned about before the buy?
Thanks! I have since put the xenon lights on this car, check out the channel I have centered around BMW E39s here if you're interested @E39Source.
Hey Ryan, do you thinnk 15,900 is a good value for a 75000 mile 2001 M5?
From that information yes, just be sure to check it out in person and see the condition/ maintenance!
This M5 looks really good…now I don't know which one will be my favorite BMW…E39 M5 or E46 M3.
Love the e39s. I have a '97 540i with 139k on it. It is in wonderful condition considering its age. There are a few dings in it from where assholes hit it with their door in a parking lot, but other than that the exterior is great. I'm just finishing up replacing my AC compressor, and it needs some new valve cover gaskets, but these cars are absolutely amazing if you treat them right and are willing to keep the maintenance up on them.
Hey, thanks for the comment! Sounds like you've got a great car there. Please check out @E39Source, we've started a BMW community here on YouTube. We have tons of E39s on the channel now. If you like, you're more than welcome to make videos of your car to share with the channel, I know we'd love to see them!
what I find interesting is that the e60 rear seat is less comfortable then the e39
Now you see why the European cars are better than your. 12years BMW is still better quality materials and equipment comfortable to your most cars.
I have -always- hated American cars. Nobody builds cars like Germans do.
My M5 is 12 years old with 165,800 miles now, and I still think it will out perform (definitely) and out last new American't cars.
Nice car Ryan. I'm planning to buy myself an E39 525i once I'm done with college. Then, when I'm 25, hopefully an E39 M5 🙂
Sounds like a plan, best of luck to you! Check out @E39Source here on YouTube for tons of E39s, and a few other BMWs.
I just hit 167,000 miles an hour ago. Nothing too major, just the basics. I've done a lot of non-required improvements since this video though. In fact, I have a whole channel here on YouTube about this car, @E39Source.
I did the spark plugs, O2 sensors, thermostat, water pump, struts, springs, mounts, rotors, pads, and tires. Plus a lot of cosmetic work. Replaced all worn interior trim, fixed cluster pixels, facelift headlights and tail lights, grills, and replaced two PDC sensors.
These are well built machines, BMW are careful at selecting components…
Usual flaws are interior parts like the cupholders, which were useless from factory…
The Getrag 420 is a very robust gearbox and should if not overworked last the lifetime of the E39 M5, i have seen synchro failures in 2nd and 3rd gear wich are popular from people flat-shifting through these gears and missing or letting off the clutch too soon…
The real weak link on the driveline would be the clutch and twin-mass flywheel, i prefer replacing these with a UUC Single Mass flywheel and performance clutch…
These "weak links" of the driveline are put there to protect the rear axle drive and gearbox, but with the upgraded flywheel and clutch i have yet to see a gearbox and drive failure, it all comes down to your driving style 😉
You totally forgot to show the reverse feature on the mirrors…
I'm referring to where you put in reverse and the mirror tilts down so that you can watch your wheel as you back up to a curb….
This can of course be disabled by moving the "mirror selector" to the passanger mirror 🙂
You're right, I did neglect this detail. I love how BMW integrates little, but such useful features like that. I have yet to curb a beautiful style 65 wheel!
They have put a manual realease lever for the trunk in case you run out of battery, and don't have enough power to open the trunk to get to it. Awesome car, Ryan. The E39 is the best M5, as far as I'm concerned. Cheers from Portugal!!!
The S65 is well known for oil consumption issues and spinning rod bearings. BMW quality is far from world beating.
The E39 M5 will not out-handle a stock 2011 Mustang GT on a track and it will get flat destroyed in a straight-line. I would also wager that with like maintenance regimens the GT will have fewer issues before 150K than a typical BMW. Most Americans cars won't have the little features like interior motion sensors and the mirror "reverse feature", but that comes with the cost.
I'm not "hating" on BMW, I consider myself to be a fan of the E39 M5 in particular (that's why I'm here), but the sheer ignorance of that comment caught me off guard. Germans (especially Audi) have mastered "perceived quality", but I would put American auto engineering up against German auto engineering anyday. Working within cost caps typically breeds ingenuity. For example, google part # M-6007-50XS. 8 throttle bodies not required.
Modern American cars are without questions leaps and bounds over those from a few years ago. However, I have yet to find one (even after NAIAS 2013) that feels near most German made products.
This is true, all cars have their problems. But, I would hope that an 11 year old newer 'sports car' would beat an old 4-door luxury sedan with navigation and heated seats in a straight line. Just took the Americans 11 years. And BMWs do have more than their fair share of issues. But to the enthusiast owner, they're all worth it. 🙂
compare it to an american car that cost 72k though and you can't really say that.
Wins just the same as a complete package! America has never made a car that touches this vehicle.
Sounddd???? …..
ur sound i can hear the vid ;D
Why do people call them "angel eye" lights? BMW clearly defines them as corona ring lights.
I wil buy BMW e39 M5
Fell in love with the M5 from need for speed high stakes as a kid . I believe the one from the game is a 2000 . One day , one day itl be mine
but the 2001 LCI haven`t angel eyes?
Angel eyes were introduced to the American market with the E39 face-lift, which started for the 2001 model year and production month of 9/2000.
Because they look like halos
