Stalling problem occurs after 1-2 hours of relatively slow riding on gravel roads (15-30mph). Return to asphalt seems to trigger loss of power (typically gear 2 or higher). Once engine is stopped, it can be started again within a few minutes, but will only stay running for several minutes before loss of power reoccurs. Complete cool down overnight seems to allow the problem to go away until the next long slow gravel ride.

In this video, the problem happens around 36 seconds. I’m holding the throttle steady, and it just starts to run rough, sputter, and eventually dies. Just prior to this (~30 seconds in the video) I was able to rev the bike up just fine. The bike had been sitting in the shade for ~30 minutes prior to this video.

  1. @neato24. Does it only do it when you pull in the clutch and the engine is going back to idle? Or does it do it ever when you're driving normally down the road? If it only happens when it tries to idle after pulling in the clutch, that is more of a calibration problem. Dealer should be able to request a new calibration from BMW. It it happens while driving, our problem was (and still is) the fuel pump control module. We carry a spare with us now :(.

  2. @Rockynight We haven't had that problem yet, but I hear it's somewhat common. Kari loves her BMW, but I keep wanting to check out the new Honda NC700X. Maybe not as capable off-road, but probably a lot more reliable than the BMW has been.

  3. Dealer loaded some new maps from BMW, but that didn't fix anything. Then they replaced the fuel pump controller with another "Silver" controller. That temporarily fixed the problem, but it came back the next year. I've since ordered a "Black" controller from Max BMW and it has been fine for this past year. However, I now keep a spare controller, and a bypass cable with us on the bike since I'm not all that trusting of the fuel controller. It's expensive, but so far all is well.

  4. I had what I think is the same issue on my 2012 f650gs twin — you can see my videos under RedonKiLaus — unexpected stalling in cold weather; stalling out after running on the highway at 85 MPH and then stopping — engine would act very strange. I fixed most of it with a SOL2 accelerator from a place in Belgium and now I put a tablespoon of ashless, smokeless, synthetic 2-stroke oil in the gas each tankful. So far, no more issues. I am sure BMW would say this voids the warranty — who cares?

  5. I do! The part number is: 16147720778. I believe it is the same part number as the silver controller though. I called Max BMW on the phone to confirm they had the black ones, and they indicated that they did (a lot of parts suppliers were still selling silver ones when we bought ours). We've had the black one installed since Fall 2011, and haven't had any stalling problems since. However, we don't ride the bike all that much. I always keep a Burnsmoto fuel pump wiring harness with the bike too.
