After struggling in the SUV segment with the two-row and quite pricey Touareg, Volkswagen finally revealed the competitive three-row Atlas. With this model still being brand new, we don’t expect any big changes when the 2019 Atlas rolls in.
As a carryover, we expect no visual changes inside or out. The refreshingly new body gives Volkswagen a ruggedness it’s missed in the SUV market for ages. The interior continues the refreshingly simple look and feel as the exterior, yet still brings in some of the premium features VW buyers expect, including the available Digital Cockpit, full leather upholstery, and more.
With everything else remaining the same, we expect the standard features to carry over too. If this proves true, look for the 2019 Atlas to come standard with cloth seats, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more.
We also expect no changes under the 2019 Atlas’ hood, so look for it to come standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Keep in mind that this base engine is available beyond the base S trim, but only by special factory order. The optional engine will remain a 3.6-liter V6 with 276 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission in the 2019 Atlas will remain the eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is also available. In its debut year, the Atlas received the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick rating — its second-highest honor. It received “Good” ratings in all five crash tests and a “Superior” rating in the front-crash avoidance. What kept it from getting the top rating was its “Marginal” rating in the new headlight test. With no changes in the works, look for these ratings to remain the same in 2019.
Pricing & Release Date
While there’s no official release date, we expect to see the 2019 Atlas in showrooms in the spring of 2018.
With no changes in store, we expect pricing to remain roughly the same in the new year. This would put the 2019 Atlas at $31,425 to $49,415 (destination fees included) depending on equipment.
