Motor1 Executive Editor Seyth Miersma finds out if the new BMW 5 Series can hold it’s own as a posterchild for the forward march of technology and remain worthy of the title “ultimate driving machine.”

BMW circa 2017 is not the same kind of car company that you may have grown up adoring. Though still making successful driving machines, the German automaker has made its biggest strides with technologies that add to the in-cabin user experience, and those that aim towards a future where cars drive and people simply ride along.
The all-new 5 Series is the most recent poster child for this revision of priorities. In 540i trim, this is still an exhilarating sedan to drive when an enthusiast gets behind the wheel (thank god). But sheer weight of new technologies on the car can’t be ignored, and, frankly, it’s things like automatic parking and gesture controlled infotainment systems that are more likely to bring in new buyers.
In this week’s Why Buy? we cover the new 5ers driving chops, of course, but we also dig deep into the latest form of iDrive, autonomous driving features, and all the ones-and-zeros tech that makes the midsize BMW such a compelling luxury competitor. Enjoy the rundown in the video above.

This is definitely more luxury than the CTS and has very similar sporting characteristics. It's a well done all arounder
okay never mind. that cost is incomprehensible
Great review, the new 5 series looks like a really badass car and I'd love to step up from the 320D one day.
that air breather is ugly……i know its functional but ruin the looks
Finally, an honest review! Thanks for posting…
The 2018 Kia Stinger GT will be a better value
Too bad all BMWs nowadays need fake engine sound played via the speakers
540 a w środku 3.0;/
That Ass is ugly….
Hey Motor1, do you want to test my BMW m6 GC, If yes, reply me here .
Great review, though $82K for this car with a V6 is a total RIP OFF. $50k-$60K (max) with all these option is reasonable.
stop ORA Comer.
Audi and bmw are two brands that are boring than ever with the same designs for ever. Mercedes new cars are so ahead than these cars. İf you love driving get a porsche, if you want big luxury car get a mercedes. And forget audi forever.
Why are you wearing a Nike a jacket? Nike is endorsing you? How much? B-J, again
i have an f10 530 , THAT trunk does not dwarfs anything except itself. have you seen the trunk of an Audi A6? ITS MASSSIVE , not in comparison, its just huge on its own.
no BMW will ever have a big trunk due to engineering reasons.
— 50/50 weight balance
— long nose of car due to the line 6 engine/ turbos
— rear wheel drive car suffer from the driveshaft going all the way back.
I'd like to have that warehouse-compound-basement thingy place as a hideout and store my dream cars in
Nothing tops driving your shiny new $80k+ 540i past the abandonded factories and houses in Detroit….I'm surprised you didn't get jacked at a stoplight. Kudos for your bravery.
Android play is not available? Is that true?
where are his eyes looking? hello? the camera is over here…..
script maybe?
Too plain and not looking premium.E Class Coupe for the same price looks sexier in my opinion even while i am a BMW fan.May be with M Performance parts that G30 will look better, but i have to look these cars closely to make my mind which one is better and which one should i buy.
If you have an F10 5 series keep that car
great review.
When is it releasing in india
I might upgrade my F10 to this G30.
I would settle for a 530i. But I’m more of a e300/e350 person.
Is a manual available in this model?
I dont know I'll keep my e60 2008 m package 272 bhp plus optimed the engine adding 320 bhp for 1/3 of the price of that 540.
Excellent review. Very well done
1:24 Wrong. E-Class has a considerably bigger trunk.
I have this car how come i didn’t get this kind key
