If you are going to be replacing a starter on an E-Series BMW, watch this video first!! This video isn’t specifically a how-to of replacing the starter… I’ll leave a link to a good video someone else made below. This video is about avoiding unnecessary trouble during the replacement process, or how to fix it if you already messed up. This isn’t a long video, so please, watch the whole thing so you can avoid the mistake I made or at least learn a good trick for fixing the mistake!

Great job as usual !!
I was just thinking about you
He's back
Any more videos coming on the 55 Chevy??
So my BMW starter story goes like this… My mom had an 03 e46 M3. I was driving it and the starter quit on me. I was @ a friend's house and neither of us had any of our tools on us. No way to go get our tools either. We removed all the stuff(intake, etc.) to get to the starter w/ a butter knife(yes, a butter knife). We got it off and eventually had to run up to a friend's tire shop to get a couple tools to put it back in. It was a pain. The car which was silver, from then on, was known as "Butterknife."
Well done!
This is my exact problem, and I was thinking the same exact way of going about it. My concern was whether or not the bolt will come out of the jb welded socket after
5:30
Thank you very much for sharing. Anyone doing this job should be aware. All the videos I saw did address this problem which is the most important part of the starter removal process.
E14 ring spanner is a useful tool on the rear nut
Good informational vid. Couldn't you have done the work from under the car to avoid removing the intake manifold?
Thank you for the time doing this video trying to help others.
Good luck torquing those bolts to spec!
Can i reuse the original bolts
Thank you. Mine didn't have corrosion — but being 18 years old, was concerned, as already had done this before on an E36 BMW. I used the same 12-point 11mm wrench with 15 degree offset, that I used on the E36, both worked nicely without rounding.
I just got that damn evil stupid bolt out. Had to saw-zaw a vertical slit that cut the bolt in the middle of the threads. Still half the bolt was holding the starter in. then I drilled in the center of the slit to just weaken the starter ear metal. Then I just took a hammer and bashed the starter loose. It broke off leaving a nub of the starter ear with the rest of the bolt. Then I hammered the nub in a way to twist it around the remaining bolt. The nub finally came off. Then the bolt was sitting loose in the tranny bore. Just pulled it out. I’ve worked on cars for years. This was the worst job I’ve ever done. I gave up multiple times. Told my dad to bring to a shop because I was done. It really demoralized and angered me. Seriously. But I got it out. I listened to all the warnings but I didn’t appreciate just how horrifying it is. But I fing did it lol. Just get violent without messing up the starters mating surface on the tranny.
In very many cases, in order to use jb weld, the head of the bolt is soaked with oil, in order for jb weld to work, surface of metal absolutely HAS to be clean and scuffed as much as possible. In this case. That head of the bolt is a super "can't understand normal thinking"
Just my 2 cents
What's so horrible about those starter?
