Continueing work on my VW diesel that hasn’t been run in about 2 years. Replacing the blown thermostat housing. Starting it up and going for a test drive!
You can check out the garage I had set up for the car over at GasSavers.org. I was logging MPG every tank at one point. I gave it the project name of Tyrannis Terminus, which as far as I could tell, is Latin for ‘End of the tyrant’ .

How did you get that t-stat flange to seal. I've ordered multiples of that. The first one I replaced I cracked the plastic try to tighten it down enough to quit leaking. The next one I used a liquid gasket and, that lasted a few months. Then I got one with a chip in it, took that back and, got another that slowly leaked and, eventually blew apart like yours. This last one I've got won't even seal with a liquid gasket. The water pump is about a year old and, all the edges are smooth. It feels almost like those metal collars in the flange are to thick and, prevent the part from being able to seat tightly against the water pump.
