Guide on how to check the high and low speed fan operation on Mk4 vw golfs with climatronic.
here’s the other videos of the resistor plate being fitted:

and here’s a long thread about the problem and how to make your own resistors to replace the burnt-out original ones:

Crud, I guess I need a new fan. The little one works, but the big one never works at all.
Dude, I've been trying to pull that connector off from the top, really didn't want to jack it up, thanks for clearly showing how the clip works. I've never worked on a car with such fiddly connectors. I have a feeling that my resistors have blown, shall soon find out.
— you did better than a haynes manual, that's for sure.
nice vid mate learnt alot there thanks for that 🙂
Yeah, my small fan works on both low and high speed but absolutely nothing from the big fan, has anyone else had this problem? What was causing it and how did you fix it? Thanks!
fixed it! Took fan off, took it apart, cleaned it and lubricated relevant parts as per htt p://pics.tdiclub. com/data/517/Fan_Repair .pdf. Now its working fine!
Hi Mate, I dont have two fans, i jus have one big fan. and on the relay when i connected the no. 1 point and right side no. 2 point the fan spins, but when i switch on the ignition and try the other two points it doesnt spin at all. i recently changed the engine coolant sensor and its working fine now, what do you think might be the problem. when i check the fuse box on the top it seems all fine too.
There is a 'fan control module' underneath the battery tray that could be defunct. Try another one you can usually get them cheap on ebay secondhand.
Just for info, the left hand green fuse is for the low speed fan operation. It's been known for this fuse holder to melt and you lose slow speed fans even thought the fuse may look intact.
Your video was very help full but only one of my fan work when i connect it like that what is wrong?
Each fan has one resister built in to it. In the fan that doesn't work, the resister has burnt out. You need to replace that fan assembly.
It can't be the resistors as they are only used for slow speed. So your fans are ok. Which would suggest the fan control module which is bolted to the chassis. You can buy them on ebay pretty cheap (secondhand) to try.
good info !! ill try this asap ! my a/c its not working and the fans just work when the temp is hot… the compresor runs but not the fans :-/ heeeellllppppp !!!!
thanks a lot bro the video was very helpful
WONDERFUL VIDEO!!! VERY SPECIFIC AND FACTUAL INFO!! GREAT HELP — THANK YOU
Hello, nice job, thx for this….. look — I have GTI MK4 2003, my fans only work for temp, but when I start the A/C the compressor not start and any fan work. I replace the FAN MODULE, but the problem is the same. U have any idea?
Hi ive done the check per video fans work at high and low speed problem i have is that as soon as i switch ignition on the fan comes on running fast then slow every ten seconds or so when its hot or cold. Would this be the fan switch or relay what would you suggest many thanks zak
Thank you for doing this video. It was great and to the point. Exactly what i was looking for. Keep up the great work.
Good video helped me have a idea what to check. My fans both stopped working, ended up being the fan control module (1J0919506N for my climatronic car). Although my fans only work on high and I'm assuming thats why it broke premature and will do so again? I went with the generic/china FCM for $50 vs. vw/audi $300
Hello i have a question for you i have a 2004 1.9 vw T5 tdi one morning i got into the van and switched on the ignition and the rad fans came on then they went off. It did this a few times one on a hot morning and another a cold morning it has not done it since. But when the engine has warmed up and the temperature goes a little over 90 the fan does not kick in is this normal. Or does she need to get a bit hotter for the fan to kick in. Or is there any way of testing the van and fan module
Thank you for breaking down that silly clip release. You saved me much frustration from the whole deal.
Excellent video. I couldn't figure out how to get that plug apart. Thanks
Hiya I check my fans and they work on both channels and I have full AC fluid had it empty and refilled but it is getting a lol cold but not as cold as two of my friends if I rev to 1500rpm it get a tiny bit colder but want get the car cold on the inside any ideas anyone
I have had people sudjest
…High pressure switch
…pump ( but pump engages the clutch perfectly )
… Get the ac scanned but you can do your own check on your ac by doing a key sequence and mine comes up saying 444 which is perfect means no errors
Please help I really want to get it fix for summer
the easy way to get the plug off, just push the connector in, then use your fingernail tu pull the tab back and the connector pulls off. the trick is to push the connector deeper in before you push the tab. easily done from above. ( i work on these cars all the time )
So if you insert the jump wire into the number 1 slot and nothing and then number 2 it runs the low on both what does that mean??? Also would you replace just the messed up motor or go ahead and get the assembly??? Please if any body reads this answer soon cause I will be ordering a fan assembly next week if I get no input cause I've already replaced the control module.
Help please??. So what do you think is going on if the fans continue to run for up to ten minutes after the ignition is off????? All fuses seem to be intact? Thanks and yes great video!
Hello,
when I connect 1 and 2 any fan doesn't move, but when I connect 2 and 3 the little fan moves. I'm quite sure about the big fan is broken, but ¿why the little one doesn't move when I connect 1 and 2?
My polo radiator fan, windows and air con not workin….. all fuse are fine, please help.
et ça prouve quoi !! que c'est le relais qui et hs !!
so if the radiator fan doesnt turn on at all does that mean the fan is bad?
Good video thanks
My problem is that when bridging, it does not activate high speed but low speed works. Will I have to change the FCM?
If Fans come on by jumping, that means that the fans are good and that the fan switch is bad? Fuses check out good both on top of the battery and as well as the fuse inside the panel.
If my low speed check doesn`t work, what`s wrong with the circuit??
Thanx a lot!
hey . i have asked on uk-mkivs but havent had much luck . my fans dont come on even with air con turned on i havent had overheating yet. i have tried the jumping like you showed . and fans kick in so would this suggest the switch ?
Hi, I currently have no fans. When the switch is bridged the control module clicks but the fans still don't work. If I wire the fans directly to the battery the small fan works but the big one doesn't. If the problem is just the big fan would that stop both fans working or should I be looking at something else?
Thanks in advance
