You will see that many of the tips and procedures used are universal for skill sets «every mechanic should know» and that the biggest value to my videos is the teaching of these skills that are not found in a service manual.
I often get asked this question:
Q: How does one learn these skill sets «every mechanic should know» if they are not found in a manual?
A: NUMBER 1…..GET DIRTY and start wrenching.
-Ask questions
-Find a seasoned craftsman to mentor under
-Tech schools can significantly speed this time up
-Research, read, watch YouTube videos
Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything.
You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank?
-Don’t take for granted opportunities to learn deeper
-Be humble and seek advice
-Be intentional with your learning plan
-Don’t blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it!

I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. These videos are used for review of labs for students and creating a deeper understanding of the lesson/skill set. As there is often more than one way of doing something, may you enjoy this free information as much as our students do in person. PLEASE HIRE OUR GRADUATES!

If you would like more info on the program feel free to contact me @ 712-274-8733 ext 1204 or email [email protected]

  1. always put the loctite in the hole if its a blind hole

  2. Maybe a bit off topic question:
When using a cam plate 2007 or later on a very early 1999 TC88 it is neccesary to block a hole in the cam plate, because there is no casting boss to align with the cam plate.
It feels a bit scary just to block the oil flow. So, how does this work?
Not so good written as I am a swede with poor English skills:)

  3. I've been a machinist 25 years, Why not indicate it and be precise?

  4. I appreciate the video. Thank you. I would add that if it were me I would have replaced the tensioner as well. Why put an old tensioner back in service while it is so easy to replace?

  5. I'll repost this here (which I should have done in the first place) because it may help your school's programs so I want to be sure you see it.

When I worked at our local community college I found out donors could get a receipt for their donations and that the donor can supply a value figure for the receipt, which they then use for tax purposes. I also found out this is key to business support for many programs! Our local construction contractor has some of our graduates working for them and they'd regularly bring machinery, motors, and metal structures our welding and mechatronics classes made great use of. I also found out that the school can legally and with no fuss, sell metal and equipment (equipment NOT on State inventory lists which is a separate account) in return for a "donation". It is not required to go to auction/govliquidation like State assets. Local dealers could do well donating anything they are comfortable with. A motorcycle salvage could do very well and get positive press for supporting the school. A "supply chain" example: Our local fab company use laser cutters on steel plate. Their drops happen to make perfect welding coupons! They load our flatbed free and get their receipts. The metal is beveled and welded until it's unusable, then the school sells it to a scrapyard (it's clean scrap) and the funds go into school programs. It's legal and it lifts a huge burden from the welding program which would otherwise have to buy more metal. The scrap from plate buys pipe for the pipe welding classes.

  6. does it matter the position of the pistons while doing this?
