You will see that many of the tips and procedures used are universal for skill sets «every mechanic should know» and that the biggest value to my videos is the teaching of these skills that are not found in a service manual.
I often get asked this question:
Q: How does one learn these skill sets «every mechanic should know» if they are not found in a manual?
A: NUMBER 1…..GET DIRTY and start wrenching.
-Ask questions
-Find a seasoned craftsman to mentor under
-Tech schools can significantly speed this time up
-Research, read, watch YouTube videos
Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything.
You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank?
-Don’t take for granted opportunities to learn deeper
-Be humble and seek advice
-Be intentional with your learning plan
-Don’t blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it!

I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. These videos are used for review of labs for students and creating a deeper understanding of the lesson/skill set. As there is often more than one way of doing something, may you enjoy this free information as much as our students do in person. PLEASE HIRE OUR GRADUATES!

  1. I was a harley tech for 9 years. I had on the job training. All techs should have formal training at a accredited school. I made so many mistakes because I didn't have a firm foundation for repairing motorcycle. Good work. You cover the do's and don't's of repairing bike. I salute you.

  2. These are superb training videos. Points out important tips not usually covered in the service manual. Keep em coming!!

    Great Job.

  3. I know this is not the best place to ask but I have a question, something I have been wondering about for a wile. here it is. Has anyone ever tried to resurface a slightly scared up cam plate.

  4. i dont ever type to people on line but watching your videos on fixing harleys are the best explained ways of the right ways of installing parts the right way. if i could go to school to learn how to be a bike mech. it would be you i would want to teach me!!!!! thanks for your videos

  5. you showed everything except replacing the cam bearing inside the block.

  6. On really critical places to 'count on' threadlockers—such as the bearing anti-walk out plate….a small drop of threadlocker under the head, clean and dry of course will help hold the fasteners also. While it also may protect the threaded sections of the use of the threadlocker from oils, etc. ingress. Sort of an insurance policy.

  7. Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do it!

  8. if u were my teacher I would shoot you u are so fucking wrong about the snap ring n u r so fucking boring

  9. i wanted a harley until i started watching these service videos
to many failure points in the desighn

  10. david berneko guess u are smarter than the manual better go achool harley with you knowledge.

  11. He mentions service manual recommending checking and replacing worn cam chain tensioner shoes. Then why in the Hell didn't the Harley mechanics that had serviced my bike for years do that before the Mickey mouse piece of crap plastic blew apart plugging oil pump ports blowing out relief ball and losing all oil pressure at 90 mph in the middle of Nowhere Wyoming, ruining a trip with my 2 best friends on Honda Goldwings. Yes I'm pissed off!!!

  12. EXCELLENT VIDEO! Referring to my O2 fat boy. If the cam tensioner shoes needed to be replaced, what would you recommend? Two new shoes and springs? Or the updated screaming eagle hydraulic system? Or maybe something else? Thanks.
