Both vehicles are Dakar racers. The VW Touareg 2 is a short wheelbase SUV, lighter with less horsepower. The Touareg was known as the vehicle to beat in the Dakar because of it’s reliability. The Hummer H3 is a longer wheelbase SUV, heavier, with substantially more horsepower. These factors leave the Touareg with a very loose rear end that comes around quickly. The Hummer is more planted. The longer wheelbase means the rear is easy to control using the throttle and hand brake. Still, the Touareg is fast but requires more careful handling and has less leeway for adjustment. The stable and powerful Hummer has more room for tuning to the road course. The long wheelbase and room for tuning set the Hummer up so the throttle can point the nose in a corner and recovers from a drift much easier.
These are separate single races so other vehicles in the race sequence are computer controlled cars, just ignore them. Most of the race the two are running neck and neck. One would gain here, the other would gain there. That is, until one vehicle makes a critical error which decides the race. It is easy to spot in the split screen section of the video. Each race is shown from the driver’s point of view separately. The both races are run simultaneously in a split screen setup. It is very interesting to watch the two vehicles run neck and neck in split screen, see their different lines and varied behavior together. The difference between first and second is about 1 second, so a tight race!
