XF gets a remake; F-Type gets host of upgrades; new Lexus RX, Mercedes GLE, Infiniti QX50 and Range Rover unveiled
Luxury car reveals stole the spotlight at this year’s New York Auto Show. As the last major auto show of the season, one would think most headline car reveals would have happened already at Detroit and Geneva, but there were still some pretty significant debuts in New York. Here are some of the highlights:
INFINITI QX30 CONCEPT by John LeBlanc

What is it? First seen at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, this is the concept for the forthcoming production QX30 coupe/crossover. Rivals will include its Mercedes-Benz platform-mate, the GLA, plus the Audi Q3, Buick Encore, BMW X1 and Lexus NX. The “X” in the Infiniti’s name means it’s the compact, front- and all-wheel-drive “crossover” version of the future Q30, a four-door hatchback that also shares Benz bones, this time the European-market A-Class. Both of these new Infiniti Q models are expected to be built in the same Mexican factory as their Mercedes-Benz counterparts, and share Benz motors, too.

When is it coming? The production version of the Infiniti QX30 is supposed to debut by the end of this year. Why does it matter? Along with the redesigned (and larger) QX50 “personal” crossover, the smaller QX30 coupe/crossover gives Infiniti some real presence in a growing segment.

Should you buy it? It really depends on pricing. If Infiniti keeps the QX30 costs below the Mercedes-Benz GLA it’s based upon, the Japanese automaker may have a real value proposition to offer.
2016 INFINITI QX50 by John LeBlanc

What is it? Sporty-looking coupe/crossovers are a hot commodity with luxury car buyers. Although they don’t sell in large numbers, these highly profitable vehicles — like the BMW X6/X4, forthcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLK Coupes and Porsche Macan — are all sold for a premium over the more practical crossovers they are based upon.

For the heavily redesigned 2016 QX50 (it replaces the EX line), the brand hasn’t gone whole hog by calling it a “coupe,” instead settling for the term “personal crossover.” However, now in addition to being one of the better driving vehicles in its class, the automaker has addressed one of the biggest complaints with the outgoing model: the dearth of rear legroom.

That’s been addressed with the addition of 80 millimetres of wheelbase, with most of the increase in interior space felt in the QX50’s backseat, where rear legroom grows by 109 mm and rear knee room is boosted by 100 mm. As well, the redesigned 2016 QX50’s exterior has been tweaked to make it look like the rest of the Infiniti family. When is it coming? The 2016 Infiniti QX50 will be available this fall as a single model, powered solely by a 325 horsepower six-cylinder gas engine, seven-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive. Three option packages will be available.

Why does it matter? As part of Infiniti’s ongoing resurrection plan, the automaker needs to be relevant in all segments. The new 2016 QX50 definitely makes the brand more competitive in the burgeoning, small-but-sporty crossover class.

Should you buy it? The QX50 — nee EX — was always a great drive. Now the 2016 model has class-competitive rear legroom as well.
2016 LEXUS RX by John LeBlanc

What is it? The fourth-generation of the Toyota luxury brand’s wildly successful midsize, five-passenger, all-wheel-drive four-door RX crossover. Like before, there’s the Ontario-built gas-V6 RX 350 (now with direct-injection and making 300 horsepower) and the Japanese-made gasoline-electric RX Hybrid. New for 2016, the F-Sport package will be available on both. In what is emerging as a new design trend, the new RX gets a floating rear roofline — just like the new Nissan Murano. In fact, the 2016 RX’s larger proportions allows it to wear the Lexus brand’s aggressive design language more elegantly than the smaller NX crossover.

When is it coming? Expect Lexus’ bestseller to go on sale later this year in Canada as a 2016 model. MERCEDES-BENZ GLE by Graeme Fletcher
