Skoda Octavia Overview
Launched in the last millennium, the first generation Skoda Octavia found its place in a lot of hearts and garages alike. The launch of Laura saw the Octavia being positioned a bit lower, but now, as Skoda’s tagline says, ‘the legend is back’. And how.
Now available in three engine options, a 1.4-litre TSI petrol, a 1.8-litre TSI petrol, and a 2.0-litre TDI diesel. There’s a wide choice of gearboxes on the list as well, with both manual and automatic units completing the line up. Design wise, it looks a little muted, especially in comparison to the first generation Octavia, which had a more muscular and prominent styling. There’s a good range of options available in terms of features as well, and that’s one of the key reasons why the Octavia makes a good case for itself, even with rivals like the Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, and Toyota Corolla Altis around. The car, based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, shares its underpinnings with other VW Group products like the Golf and Seat Leon.
Skoda Octavia Interior
While the Skodas of the past have followed a minimalistic design in terms of interiors, the new Octavia offers a decent looking dashboard, plush cabin, and the company first touchscreen-operated infotainment system.
The 5.8-inch touchscreen unit also supports various media for audio input, there’s also proximity sensor on the system and a total of eight speakers, steering mounted audio controls. The leather seats are comfortable, and with the dual-zone Climatronic AC, it doesn’t get too hot/cold inside the cabin. An optional panoramic sunroof makes the experience even better. Rear seat comfort is good too, but it’s the space that will surprise the most. The rear leg room is more than adequate for long journeys, it not just makes the car comfortable, its presence also makes the vehicle way more practical. Adding to the rear seat comfort is the space again, this time in the boot. The openable hatch not just makes loading big items easy, but the construction of the car makes carrying large items in the boot an easy task.
Skoda Octavia Mileage
Engines used in Skodas are generally frugal, and the Octavia is no exception to the case. While the 2.0TDI is the best option if you’re looking to keep the fuel bills low, the 1.4TSI is a great balance between efficiency and turbo petrol performance. The 1.8TSI is more performance oriented and as a consequence, gets lower fuel economy figures.
Skoda Octavia Performance and Handling
Now, being a Skoda Octavia, the car needs to handle brilliantly. Why? Because all previous generation versions did so. It can’t let those down who have been waiting for the car to make a comeback, and it certainly doesn’t.
In fact, it is one of the best handling cars in its segment. The overall balance is good, and even though it’s 4.6-meters long, it stays under control. The electronics certainly help but the mechanical stiffness is good enough to live up to the enthusiasts’ expectations. But that doesn’t mean Skoda has made the ride worse. It handles bad roads with ease, and attacks corners with even more dedication than you would expect. The turn-in is brilliant, and at no point does the engine feel short on breath, not even the entry-level 1.4TSI motor. The steering might not the heaviest, but does its job well. The car changes directions with ease, and can carry good speeds around bends.
Skoda Octavia Competitors
Unlike the time when Skoda had introduced the Octavia for the first time in the country, there are a lot of competitors against the current Octavia. There’s Chevrolet with its Cruze, Hyundai with the new Elantra, and Toyota with its Corolla Altis in the same segment as the new Octavia. To make it even worse, the growing shift towards SUVs won’t help either. People are looking to buy bigger SUVs, so there might be a good number of people who would prefer something like the XUV500 or the Nissan Terrano over a car from the D-segment. Also, there’s the VW Jetta, which offer similar underpinnings as the Skoda, but under a different brand, and different styling.
