Each of these sporty coupes represents the heart and soul of its respective manufacturer. The BMW M8 Competition, for example, benefits from the automaker’s heavy investments in suspension and all-wheel-drive technology to help the driver achieve speed and comfort. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, meanwhile, adds a supercharger to the Blue Oval’s most exotic V8 engine, then tosses in active dampers and a thoroughly modern gearbox. Our most controversial entrant is likely the Polestar 1, an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid powered by a humble 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (albeit one strengthened via a supercharger and a turbocharger, along with two electric motors).

In our crusade to pick the best contemporary take on a decidedly nostalgic segment, we would evaluate the BMW, Shelby, and Polestar over an 1,800-mile road trip, culminating in a full day of track testing at the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR). In that time, we’d critique each vehicle’s comfort and tractability in heavy traffic, nimbleness in mountain passes and country roads, fuel economy, and outright speed in a controlled environment.

Each of these three offers its own take on the modern muscle car formula, so we set out to decide which one does it best.

    The BMW and Volvo are luxury performance cars, not muscle cars****.

  5. Any guy who says he doesn’t miss a manual in a high hp muscle car is a new age sissy and honestly has no business trying to rate real muscle, seriously all of these dudes have zero credibility. Two of those cars aren’t muscle cars, period. What is considered a man nowadays is yesterday’s milk toast punk. SMH.

  9. You need better track testing, including PRO Lap times by one driver.

  10. This is the worst comparison ever, non of there’s cars are near each other‘s price. Might as well take a Honda Fit, Audi RS 3, and a Porsche Tycan and review them instead, then acting like you’re so surprised how all the cars are so different. Like no shit

  11. I did not see that outcome. That the majority of them would rather drive the Polestar then the other two surprised the hell out of me. This must be the first time ever i ever heard a car reviewer prefer a volvo over a bmw. Well this is the first time volvo ever build a car that is comparible with a frickin Ford Mustang and BMW M8.

  12. Let’s keep in mind both the other cars are at the double the price mark. Do they offer DOUBLE the performance? GT500 for the win on performance vs price ratio alone.

  13. The M8 and Polestar 1 aren’t even muscle cars. The GT500 is the only one here that is a muscle car.

  19. Shelby all day not saying it’s better but just the price factor. I’ll take some cheap plastics for a 80k car I can afford with almost 800 horsepower.

  22. The fact is the only muscle car here is mustang bcs its more powerful and its rwd muscle car needs to be rwd dont get me wrong other two are awesome as well but we cant really call them muscle cars

  23. I would take the M8 for overall performance and quality feel. The M1 and M2 buttons make it easy to launch and the electronic dashboards give it a modern look and feel. Best value is easily the Shelby GT500 and if Ford actually made the interior components TOP quality along with making the drag strip mode a one button preset, like the BMW, it would easily be the top pick over all 3. Perhaps if they made it AWD, the extra power could go to the front wheels which may keep the car from spinning as much off the line.

  25. Polestar 1 has the protection from crashes ,the best in fact cause it's a volov
