Design

I still really like the design of the S6 Edge. The full glass, front and back, with the brushed aluminum type finish on the outside of the phone was a really nice design. The design of the S6 Edge was a new generation of design when replacing the S5 with it’s chrome outside edge, plastic body and the faux leather rear.

Performance

The performance for me is still quite good. I’m sure some people can analyze the performance and criticize it, but in my day to day use it holds up well. I don’t notice too many dropped frames, or any real lag. It does slow down quite a bit when all the apps are updating, but I have it set to only update apps when plugged in so I’m not usually using it much while it’s updating.

Battery

Here’s where my problem is. I’m lucky to get through the day with 1.5-2 hours of screen on time (SOT). The nice design and thinness means the battery is rather small. The wireless charging and fast charging are great to have, but if you’re out all day, you’ll 100% need a battery pack to give you a boost. The S7 kept the same screen size and upper the battery, and my friends with an S7 are seeing very good SOT.

Other Features

Some other features the phone has are an infrared transmitter that you can use, with an app, to control your TV and other infrared devices. This was removed in the S7 and S8 so if it’s something you value, you might want to keep the S6 Edge or look for another manufacturer that has kept the IR transmitter.

Samsung removed the waterproofing and SD card slot from the S5, which can be a problem to some and not for others. You should be careful with your phone around water regardless, but the extra security is always nice. The SD slot can be a big deal for people with lots of music, photos, videos or those who don’t trust the cloud. If you have lots of data from your provider and trust the cloud, it isn’t so much of a big deal to you. Just another thing to consider though.

Should you upgrade?

To me, I could keep this phone for another year and manage. I would have to make sure I have a battery pack on me whenever I go out, or a charger nearby. Performance and the features you get are still good for a phone these days, in my day to day use. On the other hand, the extra things you get on the S8 are what enticed me to upgrade. The narrower frame, larger infinity display with HDR, face/iris scanner, battery processor, bigger battery (battery life remains to be seen though – I think it will be better than the S6 but maybe not quite as good as the S7 as the screen size has gone up from the S7 but the battery size has not), keeps the fingerprint sensor, extra 1gb of RAM, and on screen buttons are enough to get me to upgrade.
