Restoring aluminium trim.

I made this video last year while I was working on my 1970 Ford F-250 Camper Special. The trim was HORRIBLE! I spent hours looking on the internet for how-to’s but never really had much luck and the local shops I went to basically told me the stuff was junk. I forgot to mention in the video that I had to start using 100 grit paper on the grill to remove all of the scaling and worked my way up to 600 grit.

  1. @1972FordF150 You nailed it, just about 10mpg. My truck has a 360 and everything I've read says they are the worst on mileage but if they are rebuilt to a 390 you will increase the mpg by around 20%.

  2. @116falconer Hmm, I wonder why a 360 would get worse than a 390. More of a load on it is my guess.

  3. @1972FordF150 I believe it has to do with the stroke. If I remember correctly Ford had the 390 and wanted a smaller displacement engine so they just chopped the stroke on the 390 and ended up with the 360. With that the engine as a whole has to work harder causing it to burn more fuel.

  4. @116falconer The 360 is a 390 block with the 352 crank and rods. Also I think they have these 360's factory retarded like 4 degrees and that causes them to burn even more fuel and lack some more power.

  5. @1972FordF150 Thanks for the info. Hey check out my new video, the carpet in my truck caught fire today from a stinking hole in the exhaust, just put the 3 w's in front. youtube.com/watch?v=HQWKysCTt6c

  6. That coating that u sanded through protects the aluminum from oxidizing so now you have to protection to the elements beside you polishing the crap out of it. Nice truck btw

  7. dude was that santa calling telling you stop fucking around and to get your ass back to the northpole shop and get to work !! lol….. dude your video gave me a good laugh !!! thx..
it is a lot of work polishing the trim

  9. man that was great- gonna try it this week- great info I have an old 64 Ford Falcon that needs help- tons of bad aluminum — great video

  10. looks like an idea to me

FYI — much of the new trim for a 64 Impala is flimsy crap
thats why I am here getting ideas

  11. your doing a great job understanding what your doing ' to make the job easier get a auto buffer to use with the mothers.  be sure to protect your paint . finish sanding with 1200 paper to make the buffing faster …   nice truck !! but needs a nice set of aluminum wheels to brighten up the paint.  good job dude.

  12. The next time you do a video you should remove the vise-grips from your nuts so you don`t sound like a chipmunk .

  13. Off topic….the back ground music is so funny playing fast lol

  14. I would like to see how it looks now after you removed the electro plated coating?. not a good idea and I have a feeling you now have a life of constant polishing!   Just a question have you had your nuts removed r-kid? 🙂

  15. Have a 70 Camper special to restore. This is a helpful vid. Nothing on the net that is as entertaining and informative……"Where the hell is my finger" had me rolling.
    thanks

  17. great video! I have a 2004 gmc yukon with chrome trim on side of truck that's in bad shape and was wondering if this would work on what i think is aluminum chrome trim. please help

  18. HAHAHAHA………..LOVE the voice…

  19. what is the mother's product called? Mother's polish ?

  20. Would love it if you did a follow up video of nothing but you polishing the rest of the aluminum while humming the Bridge Over the River Kwai whistle song with that midget voice.

  21. Nobody wants to hear your life story. I couldn't even get past a quarter of the video. get to the point!

  22. Thanks for the video and the update video. I just bought a '64 Fairlane and will be doing this soon. I was wondering how it would hold up over time and the update video answered my question. Also thanks for the Dremel suggestion! It never crossed my mind to use that!

  23. I am also restoring some aluminum trim & molding on a 67 dart. After some research I discovered that ALL aluminum trim from the factory was anodized, and that is the top layer you are removing down to the aluminum. Which is fine, it looks great and the only drawback is upkeep. I have my car completely disassembled and doing each piece individually. The big decision will be wether to re-anodized after they are all polished.

  24. the best way is to remove it, strip it, polish and re anodize. the cost is well worth it and it looks period correct. i just restored my 65 rambler American 440 convertible and re anodizd every part that came anodized and it came out looking new again.!! do it right the first time!

  25. Toss in a couple bu'dea bu'dea and you'd sound just like porky pig… lol

  26. Thanks you saved me a lot of time! Great Video thanks for sharing!

  27. good vid but the weird voice is just too much

  28. I need to polish trim on my 1970 F250 Camper Special and I find a video on just that Thanks Dude.

  29. Most aluminum auto trim is anodized from the factory to keep it looking bright .when restoring it takes a lot of sanding to get all the anodizing off ,any spots you miss will look a little dull .I use oven cleaner to get most of the heavy anodizing off then start sanding from there . hope this helps !

  30. Awsume video! Very imformative, & yes Very intertaining!! thanks so much, i'm gonna do the same trim on my '72 short box.

  31. Great job and the motivational video

  32. Sounds like you've been inhaling too much Mother's!! LOL … seriously thanks for the video and helpful info. Great video and entertaining in more ways than one! Alvin with his chipmunks playin' in the background! LOL
