Quick video showing instructions on replacing a 1.8t thermostat for a VW Golf or Jetta. If you have the 2.0 engine it’s the same procedure but there’s no tray to remove at the front of the intake, the thermostat housing is clearly accessible.

Thanks so much!! Thought I had to remove the alternator.
the radiator fans were on for quite a while. then nothing. the temp goes down slowly and the fans aren't turning on for jack. i hope its the thermostat. looks simple to do but i have to give it a try. damn
sorry for the dumb Q ,do you have to drop the coolant for this job?
BTW, there are at least 2 others on YT removing the alternator for this job. Crazy.
that sounds great till you have to remove the bottom bolt on the thermostat!
What are you talking about. A quarter inch ratchet with a six in extension, a universal flex or flex ten mil socket and its easy. The eighteen year old kid I just hired can do it no problem.
Thank you for the video, sheesh so many others explaining it to be so complicated. Its the dead of winter here in NJ and my thermostat is definitely shot. Might give this a shot this weekend :), also gotta change out my coolant temperature sensor too cause its giving me Christmas lights on the gauges.
Yup. I don't know if I mentioned it in the video, but the easiest way to get to these two bolts is with a 6" long 1/4" extension, also a universal socket with a 10mm socket on it. The universal socket is kind of floppy depending on what kind you have, so you can wrap electrical tape around the flex joint to keep it from flopping around too much.
