On Saturday the 22nd of December 2017, A bus with 50 people on board plunged 100ft from a bridge into the river Banas in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, India, killing at least 32, police say.

The bus, which had reportedly departed from Sawai Madhopur station, crashed around 7am.

The vehicle — reports say driven by a 16-year-old — lost control & broke through a railing before falling 30 metres (100 ft) into the Banas river.

It was carrying passengers in Rajasthan to the Ramdevji Hindu temple in Sawai Madhopur district, local media report.

Most of the bodies have been retrieved & the injured taken to local hospitals.

Police, cited by the Hindustan Times, said the driver was among those who died, describing him as an untrained minor.

Most of the victims, women & children among them, drowned, the authorities say.

Rescue services used steel-cutters to extract those trapped inside the vehicle, which lay almost entirely submerged under the concrete bridge.

The bus was later dragged onto the river bank.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish at the accident & said his thoughts were with the families of those who died.

«Anguished by the bus accident in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. State Government is closely monitoring the situation, including rescue operations and providing all possible assistance to those affected: PM @narendramodi»

33 dead as bus driven by ‘minor’ plunges 100ft into river in Rajasthan

Thirty three people — 22 men, eight women and three children — were killed when the bus in which they were travelling veered off a bridge and plunged into the Banas river near Dubbi village in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan on Saturday morning.

The driver of the bus, reportedly a minor, lost control of the vehicle which took a massive swerve, broke the cement railings and fell 100 feet into the water at around 6.30 am. Seven people were injured in the accident.

Majority of the passengers, on a pilgrimage to the Ramdev Temple at Malrana Chaur village near Hindaun, were from MP & UP. A few of them were from Assam.

The Rajasthan government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The private mini bus began its journey from Sawai Madhopur at 6am with nearly 42 passengers.

According to initial reports, the bus was being driven by the teenage helper on the vehicle with the driver sitting beside him. This was confirmed by the statement of a 13-year-old passenger who survived the accident. It is suspected that the minor was learning to drive the bus when it reached the 500-metre Dubbi bridge in Sawai Madhopur district.

SP (Sawai Madhopur) Maman Singh Yadav, however, maintained: "Prima facie, it was found that Zakir (34) was driving the vehicle. The teenager was the conductor. Since both died in the accident it is not possible to know who was driving the bus."

The villagers of Dubbi witnessed the accident and immediately informed the police. According to eyewitnesses, some of the passengers drowned as they were stuck under the seats of the bus which was "70% submerged in the water".

A team of senior police officers, including SP Maman Singh Yadav, and district collector K C Verma rushed to the spot. At least 100 ambulances were put on rescue duty immediately.

All those who knew swimming got into the ice cold water and helped in rescue operations. "By 8.15 am we managed to bring 12 bodies to the shore," said Yadav.

The task of finding and removing the bodies victims trapped under the seats proved to be difficult. "We decided turn the bus upside down to pull out the trapped bodies," Yadav said. By 10 am, all bodies were fished out and police started the identification process.

"In a similar tragedy in 2010, a bus carrying college students fell from the bridge on Morel river, killing 20 people," recollected a police officer. Police have also registered a case under section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of the IPC against the bus driver.
