—HOW TO INSTALL—
Step 1: Install official Creative OpenAL from here.
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/10-openal/
Step 2: Download OpenAL Soft from here.
http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html
Step 3: Unzip folder and place 32-bit «soft_oal.dll» from bin into c:WindowsSysWOW64.
Step 4: Boot up Quake 4 and go into «Advanced Audio Options».
Step 5: Choose OpenAL as «Sound System» and OpenAL Soft as «Sound Device».

While Quake 4 with an EAX 5.0 soundcard was underwhelming, Quake 4 with OpenAL Soft’s HRTF is truly an experience to behold. This is one of the rare titles that uses 3D positional audio to its fullest extent. It’s to a degree where you can actually «see» enemies in pitch-black darkness just because you can hear exactly where they are in relation to you. Whether you think Quake 4 is a betrayal of everything ID stood for in the ’90s, an underrated classic, or just a mediocre FPS from 2005, this is one game that’s truly worth playing at least once with binaural audio.

The one problem with Quake 4 with OpenAL Soft seems to be that it doesn’t update sound position fast enough. This is a problem I’ve had with a couple games, but none that sounded as great as Quake 4. Reducing the period size helps somewhat, but you can still hear it if you do a 180 turn fast enough. The lack of EAX reverb is also unfortunate, though I’m hoping someday a port like Dhewm3 comes along and reintegrates it into OpenAL Soft’s EFX.

  1. It seems on PCs with soundcards that don't natively support the old OpenAL you have to put the dsoal wrapper in for it to work properly, you just get standard pan pot stereo panning even if it does detect OpenAL Soft.
