Driving up Mt. Umunhum Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Jose, California. 3x timelapse speedup.
The summit of Mt. Umunhum (3,489 ft / 1,063 m), long a place of spiritual significance to local Native American tribes, was also home to an Air Force radar installation during the Cold War. It fell into disrepair after it was shuttered and the summit was off-limits to the public.
Over the past few years, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has cleaned up the site and developed it as a park. Mt. Umunhum Rd., for decades just a dirt track, was paved smooth.
