It appears the minimal amount of parts needed to fix this problem is 2 large tapered roller bearings and one smaller tapered roller bearing. The oil seals for the output shafts on the transfer case would also be a wise decision.

Parts:
TIMKEN NP577617 (Qty. 2) — Large Roller Bearing or…
TIMKEN NP604623-90KA1 — for an assembly with the same part# above, but includes incorrect outer race.

TIMKEN NP312842 (Qty. 1) — Roller Bearing or…
TIMKEN NP925485-99402 for the bearing assembly including outer race

Mercedes front and rear output shaft oil seals (Part # and price edit coming soon)

The TIMKEN bearings are not easily found

What the noises sounds like before the transfer case teardown? I have a 2012 C-class AWD and Im getting a slightly high pitch whining noise when I let off accelerator around 45mph only. its barely audible but I dont have that noise before. I wonder if something is up with my transfer case.

  4. Hi, im about to remove my transmission on my 2008 c300 4matic to replace the main seal. Ever since ive had the car, theres been this buzzing noise from the shifter which im guessing is this bearing. Now Im trying to source this bearing but im a bit confused in which one it is exactly, you seem to have put 5 parts in your descriptions, when I see 2 bearing and 2 races? Why (quantity 2 for TIMKEN NP577617) ?

Because I found this kit on ebay http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Transfer-Case-Bearing-Kit-for-Mercedes-Benz-722-9-Transmission-w-4-Matic-2005-13-/222019902826?hash=item33b16add6a:g:9ksAAOSw3ydV3Qld&vxp=mtr , it includes 2 bearings and 2 races, im curious if this is what I need. Although its for the e and s class 4matic, its the same 722.9 .

  5. Hi there Innovative Solutions! I have a quick question for you:

I picked up a nice 2008 ML350 4-matic with 74k miles at an auction a couple weeks ago and it has a dull roaring/gear meshing sound coming out of the transfer case. I took it to the MB dealership here in my home town and they said after stethoscoping it that the sound appears to be coming from the output shaft bearing on the PTU. Having said that, they indicated that they wouldn't recommend taking the PTU apart but rather buying a new one for $5,500 or a used one for $3,000. Is this really the only way to fix this problem? This would appear on the surface to be exactly what you were repairing in your video. Please advise your thoughts on the matter. I bought the car right but this is a potentially huge investment to repair.

    Thank you kindly,

    Michael

  6. Can you do this without removing the transmission ? I am bout to bring my car in and show them your video/parts.
