What is it: The 2018 Audi S5 Cabriolet is the convertible variant of the company’s compact-luxury platform. It’s only offered in two trims: Premium Plus and Prestige. Key Competitors: Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet; BMW 440i convertible. Base Price: $63,275 As-Tested Price: $75,000 Highlights: The 2018 S5 cab has a new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 making 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With a new one-touch open button, the S5 cabriolet gets the wind in your hair faster than the previous model. All-wheel drive is standard.
Our Opinion: The S5 Cabriolet has a way of sneaking up on you. At first blush, the experience isn’t much different from that of the A5, which is by no means a bad thing: The A5 is itself an extremely competent open-air cruiser that packs a ton of tech, but never lets it interfere with the driving experience. The new, aggressively styled bodywork Audi rolled out recently makes more sense here, on this musclier incarnation of the model, but still, if you’re stingy with the pedal travel, it’s a smooth, easy driver…just like the A5.
So if the S5 cabrio’s $75,000 sticker leaves you stunned, know that you’re not alone; it caught Wes Raynal off-guard, too, and he questioned whether the S5 and its two extra cylinders added enough oomph to justify the price.
Maybe he just didn’t hit it hard enough, though. 354 hp on tap ain’t nothing; it’s 102 more than the standard A5 cabrio, which is more than enough to provide a dramatically different experience than the four-cylinder car…at least when it comes to acceleration (noticeably more immediate than the four-cylinder car). This sucker is quick.
Yet the extra power is all handled with such characteristic Audi smoothness and solidity that it never feels wild. Sound good? Well, maybe for you. I guess I was left craving a little bit more — not more power, but more expressiveness. The quattro all-wheel drive made for perfect, repeatable launches time after time. The V6 purr was hardly assertive. If there’s something lacking here, it’s warmth or personality.
For me, the question isn’t so much whether you get your money’s worth with the S5 cabriolet. It’s whether the experience it attempts to provide is something enthusiasts actually want in a performance-oriented convertible. Ultimately, this S5 does everything you’d want a performance drop-top to do — except, perhaps, stir the emotions.
Viewed objectively, for a solid, tech-forward, open-air experience, you can’t do much better. For my money (and assuming I can do without the two rear seats), I’d go the less rational route and take a Jaguar F-Type or even a Chevrolet Corvette. Both are a little less polished, maybe, than this Audi, but both feel a good measure more alive.
