  1. I always thought, Americans (or English speakers/writers in general) use too many commas, because they put a comma before the "and" in a list: "1, 2, and 3". Maybe that's the only place where there's a comma in English but not in German, because here the comma and the "und" can be exchanged for one another: "1, 2, 3" or "1 und 2 und 3" or "1, 2 und 3" (although it's probably best to use the last ersion).
And the old joke: Commas can save lives: "Let's eat, grandpa!"/ "Let's eat grandpa!" 😉

  2. Hmm, concerning the booby-calendar you saw: This is a thing, that I don't perceive as much as something negative. Well, sure the bodies in calendars correspond to the picture of 'ideal bodies' which the advertising industry suggests, but a body is a body and we might maybe stop looking at it as something strange, alien or unnatural. Why do we feel so uncomfortable looking at bodies?
How come movies with sexual acts are allowed for adults only, whereas movies with guns, violence and people getting shot by some kind of "hero" are quite often allowed for 12-year old children? How come killing is valued over something natural, from which life emerges? :/

  3. christmas itself is at the 25th and 26th in Germany, but we start celebrating at Christmas eve (heilligabend), which is in a way the main event here nowadays.

I always find it strange when Americans call themselves German, Irish, Italian… I mean if the mom or dad was born in a foreign country, fair enough, but people families who have been in the us for generations.. i don't get it =)

the therapist thing is not entirely true, it always depends on what form of therapy is needed, and if there is an immediate need, then there is always emergency phones, and the possibility to admit oneself to a mental-clinic.

There is nothing wrong with toasting dark bread — I do the same.

Most people are bad in speaking about feelings, but making riddles makes it even harder to understand, kind of a source of misunderstanding.

I'm not sure about the comma thing — but I think there might be a relation to being taught English, not American English in school. I'm not claiming to do it right, infact, i'm almost certain to be wrong, as i even fail at it in german, but http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/commas.asp has quite a few reasons to use commas in english.

  4. 111 MPH?? Holy crap I would’ve freaked tf out!Plus, what you explained about Obamacare in America has not been my experience at all. I had insurance with the exchanges and I couldn’t afford anything other than the minimum plans which did not cover therapists at all 🙁

  5. We do have something to keep the bugs out, we just don't have a lot of hard frames to keep them in. You have to remember that we have a lot of houses, especially in the cities, which are incredibly old. And back in the day there was no such thing as a standardized window. So there's no mass producible form factor for a lot of our houses, therefore you have to custom make them. It's not incredibly expensive, but since it was super expensive a while back, most of us who like to keep bugs out of our apartments resorted to using Fliegengitter.

In case you are interested in seeing one, buying one yourself (they're quite inexpensive).. https://www.amazon.de/tesa-Fliegengitter-Standard-anthrazit-durchsichtig/dp/B00569J8CQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1513676178&sr=8-3&keywords=Fliegengitter

  6. Are you sure about that dentist thing? I've seen that they have their practice in residential buildings sometimes. But then they don't live there. They just reorganized the apartment (or even combined two of them) as a dental practice. I don't think you'll sit in his living room to get your tooth pulled.

  7. hey LambLike,

from my own experience… you can get a therapist really quick in germany.
It took me just about 2 weeks to get the first meeting with my therapist.
After the first meeting, it took about 2 more weeks i think, to get stuff starting.

So, it took me about 1 month to get into therapy.

Btw. im from germany ^^ if that isnt already obvious xD
And i hope i didnt make too many mistakes while writing this comment.. i hate making mistakes xD

    Greetings from Cologne 😉

  8. Being patriotic as a german you mostly get compared to….well…lets put it that way…..both world wars were startedby germany.

But i cant believe you got a weird look for toastingdark bread. I used to do this when i was younger together with butter and honey. Or put it in a pan and on top of the bread you put an egg yammy

  9. — In the days when I was driving around all over germany for business my traveling speed on unlimited sections of the autobahn was 200 to 220kmph, which is about 124 to 136mph, when the traffic was sparse enough to allow such a speed.
    — We germans are not immune to sex but we are much more ok with nudity. Top less is no deal here take public breatfeeding for example. Complete nudity is another thing (restriced area like sauna or nudity camp) but still not a very big issue only definite sexual content is 18+ and has to be hidden from kids eyes.
    — mental health care is really not as developed in Germany as in the US. We have laws for distribution of doctors and the allowed density of doctors's offices. This should ensure to have all kind of doctors spread all over germany and not too many concentrate in one region where in another region there are less to none. The downside of this is we don't have enough therapists over all because many of them are not allowed to settle where they want because in that region are already "enough". But in reality there are way too less. That's why you have to wait so long. But you have the freedom of choice and you can search for as many as you like. You can even have up to 3 first therapy hours and check out if you are going along good with that therapist and if not choose to change therapist. You can check out up to 5 therapists that way without any additional costs.
    — dating issue? umm no 😀 Beating around the bush is very common in the US and part of your culture. We germans are more direct and don't want to waste time and effort?
    — Window screens. Although we love to open window to get fresh air (frische Luft) we usually don't have window screens integrated or pre-mounted to the window frames. You can get window screens at home improvement stores (Baumarkt [sing], Baumärkte [pl]). There are very cheap ones which consists only of a net and a self adhesive Velcro strip or more sophisticated with frames in various sizes for attaching them to the windows frames or the top notch ones with variable frames, maybe even capable to open them as well but very expensive. Because of our location and weather we don't suffer from that much insects like most of the states in the US therefor we don't use so much window screens and air conditioner.
    — merry christmas and a happy new year 🙂

  10. Try "Oachkatzlschwoaf". It's a bavarian "testing-word" to see whether people from other parts of germany can pronounce it. In Hochdeutsch it would be called "Eichhörnchenschwanz" or a bit more nearer to the bavarian thing "Eichkätzchenschweif". Because "Eichkätzchen" ist another (old-fashioned) word for "Eichhörnchen" and "Schweif" is a word for an animals tail. (Like the tail of a horse ist called "Schweif" instead of "Schwanz")

In englisch "Oachkatzlschwoaf" would describe the tail of a squirrel.

(I also commented below the video from ilikebigbugs)

  11. I think you only dated the wrong guys… e.g. for me it's normal, to say something "wrong", when somebody asks me, how I am feeling. Normally I tell them, I'd feel tired or out exhausted. And if somebody is familiar to me, the possibility of understand my feeling right is much easier. Otherwise the dudes you met are not capable of empathy… Classic douchebags?

(Aaaand I'm using a lot of commas 😀 You got me 🙂 )

Have nice Christmas and a "guten Rutsch" to the new year! Take care and spend special time with your familiy! I'm sure they will be soooo happy seeing you!

    Grüße aus Hannover 🙂

P.S. If you're interested in visiting Hanover at some time, I'd be very pleased, to show you the city 🙂

  12. Glad your travel situation worked out. We got the Fiktionsbescheinigung right when we filed the residence paperwork, so we could go to the US for Thanksgiving. The fine folks at Auslaenderamt are very much "by the book", but also often willing to help — a little persistence goes a long way.

  13. i was able to trace my family back 900 years then i loost track because there where no written records for "normal" ppl but i have no indication that they came from anywhere else but germany as the oldest ancestors where of the rheinfrancish tribe witch is a core german germanic tribe.
so mostlikly my ancestors where "germans"(a that thing did not exist back than)since forever, like 2000 years or so

  14. Germans are patriots. They just do not make a fuss about it. The average American is a babbler– This is not meant to be bad but when Americans tell something then the air often clatters. Take, for example, Donald Trump, President of the United States. He bragged to have concluded a billion Dollar Weapon Sales deal with Saudi Arabia. The fact is that it was only a declaration of intent by the Saudis.

  15. I'm a U.S. citizen. For some context, the Pledge of Allegiance is entirely optional in public schools. There was a very brief period of time when it was required, but that requirement was reversed in the 1940s.

Most schools, if not all, still set aside a time for the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance every day. Whether most kids respect it or ignore it probably depends on the school. When I was in elementary school, most kids would stand and pledge. By the time I got to high school, all of us would sit and continue doing whatever we were doing before. I grew up in Miami.

I find a compulsory pledge antithetical to liberty, which is pretty important to our country. Thankfully, our Supreme Court agrees.

  16. I know exactly what you mean and I agree guys from the state would understand without asking you to explain to them. Many European countries have home clinics or dentists where people can go instead of hospitals. Doctors also do house calls and it is something very common in Europe but not in the states.

  17. I guess our patriotism depends on the WW. If you're going out of the streets and tell publicly- you're proud to be a German, almost everyone would think you're probably a Nazi or at least would assume that. I guess our dark history is laying heavy on our shoulders! And I don't know, if you heard about it- we really pay attention to it, 'cause if you're doing e.g. the hitler-salute here you're getting really in trouble with the police. I think our patriotism would grow if it wouldn't automatically combined with to be a nazi, which is in my point of view sometimes a stigma.
But it's not like we aren't patriotic, when it comes to the world soccer games, we all are on fire! I guess it's similar to the super bowl in the US!

  18. Feel free to toast whatever you want! 😀 With that many points I am quite tried to comment on many of them. Sorry^^ MENTAL HEALTHCARE: Access to many jobs is restricted by regulation. This creates a supply shortage for psychotherapists, hence a long waiting list. There are certain contingents for emergencies and for Privatpatienten (people with private health insurance); those are treated way sooner. It should however be no problem to get an appointment with a coach — who may however not be medically educated. Coaching is not covered by public health insurance. INSECT NETS: They exist — however more likely in rural areas where there actually are lots of insects. It is also considered a thing the tenant has to do him- or herself (this also implies that they are removed when the tenant leaves the appartment). I hope that I did not repeat to much what other people already said 😮

  19. you know, you could actually stay in Germany like forever if you travel to another Schengen-country once in a while. Because for americans, stay times in different Schengen-countries are not added together. You could stay 90 days in Germany, travel 3 days to Austria and then stay another 90 days in Germany. just keep the bookings so you can prove it 😉 no more visa needed^^

  20. Talking about the commas, they help us reading and sometimes they are necessary to make a sentence distinct.

For example: „Petra erbte den Schmuck nicht aber ihr Mann.“ has to possible meanings.
„Petra erbte den Schmuck, nicht aber ihr Mann.“ -> Petra inherits the jewelry. But not her husband.
„Petra erbte den Schmuck nicht, aber ihr Mann.“ -> Petra doesn't inherit the jewelry. But her husband does.

  21. If you have a mental problem, you can go and see any doctor from the mental field of medicine in their emergency consultation times.
They will help you depending on their judgment of the severity of your problem. normally that means seeing them every other week for 5 to 10 minutes and some form of medication until they have a spot for you in the treatment schedule for more time-intensive therapy. But the waiting time for that spot can vary between 3 to 9 months. If you need help faster they will advise you on other steps you can take to get help, like admitting yourself to a mental hospital (does not need to be around the clock, can be daycare only).
Factors for the waiting time are the severity of your problem, which form of insurance do you have, or special contracts between your employer and a doctor, for example, mining companies or some weapons manufacturers.
