Hi All and welcome back to life In Motion!

Having owned my #porsche 718 Cayman GTS for a little over a year, and having covered roughly 12,000 miles, I was extremely surprised to be recommended work costing over £3,000!

As you may already know, I’m always careful with my cars, keeping them in the best condition I can. That doesn’t only cover cosmetics, I ensure that I’m always up to date with servicing and that wear and tear items like tyres are good to go.

In this video, I explain how something I assumed would be a quick fix become a huge bill!

Don’t forgot to hit the like button so others can find the video, and make sure to ask any questions you’d like!

Before you head off, make sure to subscribe to see plenty future videos to come but for now, I’ll see you soon!

  1. iv had this, brought from london, im in the midlands, coilpack failed, porsche replacing under warrenty, 5 weeks waiting to get it in.

  2. Why go to Porsche to fix a washer pump? It’s a self help issue, and easy to tell what’s wrong. Discs & pads would cost less than £1k. Buy them from Porsche if you want, but get a normal mechanic to fit them, if you can’t do it yourself. A mechanics Labour is 50-60% less than Porsche.

  3. Some relationships are only one way….

  4. DUDE!!! 7 minutes into your video and you still haven't said WTF is wrong…. Get on with it.

  5. I think that really goes for anything in life. Step back, breathe. Don’t immediately get angry and take things personal. Discuss, show respect, listen and the work together. Keep everything in perspective. Great video , and good lesson as well. Cheers.

  6. The most important thing to learn from this is…….don't use main dealers. That fuse? They charged you an hour or half hour's labour. Same as clearing the detritus from the front end. My BMW needed a service, first MoT and brake fluid change. Main dealership — £969. My independent specialist — £471 — using Castrol Edge oil and BMW parts. It's been the same with every main dealer I've been to — hence why I've built up a good, 18 year relationship with my local specialist. He doesn't even charge me for fault finding. Problem with the car? "Bring it in on your way home from work and I'll go over it with you." At the end — "How much do I owe you?" "Nothing." That nice shiny showroom you walked into? You're paying for that — and the free internet — and the free coffee. As soon as you walk in, they see pound signs. From a family member who's worked in main dealerships — the "technicians" are on a bonus system. The dealership sets a time for each type of job. If the "technician" uses all that time, he gets a bonus because he's made the dealership X amount of money — in other words, he's ripped you off. Needless to say, my family member never made any bonuses and left. They're not nicknamed stealerships for nothing…..

  7. The exhausts clamps should have been replaced for free.

  8. Would you have considered taking the list to a trusted independent Porsche specialist with Orem parts ? Build a relationship with them

  9. I am a bit late to help, but a lot of these can be self-repair. get a quickjack and a basic tool set and become self sufficient. It is a really easy to work on these cars.

  10. In Australia, most of these issues wouldn’t occur due to the better weather, but there’s zero chance anyone would accept the exhaust clamp/fixings issue. As most people have suggested, most things can be done yourself to avoid these unnecessary costs and it appears that an independent Porsche specialist will maintain your car to the same standard, likely better, for far less.

  11. I assume you bought the car brand new? That's kind of crazy if you did. You would think you really wouldn't have to pay too much in the first year or two of buying a brand new car.

  12. Service at a dealer the rest at an independent. Warranty is not affected as long as they are genuine Porsche parts.

  13. Wow! Man if it’s not under warranty find a good Indy!! Great video

  14. Dealers make the majority of their money on "service"; That's called an upsell…

  15. Solution: invest £5 in a 5 litre bottle of screen wash then it won’t freeze up. I usually drive until something really needs fixing (rare) or some item fails and MOT (more common), then decide if I can fix it myself. If not get an independent garage to quote. I don’t drive a Cayman but am looking at the idea, but the cost issue you describe is more to do with throwing yourself at the mercy of a main dealer when out of warranty than the car itself. You’re going to get ripped off royally by any dealer on any car. Even on big standard cars I’ve seen some horrendous examples (like Toyota self-charging their own warranty provider over £1,100 for an O2 sensor when I fixed the next one myself for under £100 and half an hours work).
