VW: 40kWh with 4C charging will be plenty for most. Most cars in that class cost more and charge at 1C.
11:00 isn't it just that a colder battery can't charge that fast any more and so can't regenerate that fast any more ?
Great video, Kenn. Would get the Kia Niro EV with the 64 kWh battery; however, not expecting it to reach the non-ZEV states in the US anytime soon. I made a reservation for the Audi e-tron the 2nd day it was available, but would prefer the Niro. Battery availability is an issue with the Niro EV.
Hi Kenn, on the subject of electric buses in Ecuador are you sure is for Guayaquil? The footage was from Cuenca. BTW my wife is also from Ecuador.
Soul EV has been sold for several years, so Kia will have taken 5+ years to achieve profitability.
The european version of the Model 3 can not be charged at existing Superchargers. All Superchargers will get an additional Combo2 CCS cable.
Really hope the BYD Ecuador effort proves highly successful as it will be an example of how cities around the planet can move forward plus save money in the process. Great show, Ken!
Again, I don’t believe anything VW says or reports. They’ve been talking shite for years. Good show Ken!
CCS for Ireland is significant , we have a high percentage of 22kwac chargers and a small percentage of ccs on same charging stations that hold chademo and 43kw ac as well. Only worry is what the internal charger is which maybe limited to 11kwac or less
Renault already producing ev for less than 18000 with 41kwh battery , ie the Zoe by next year that will be 50 from inside info leaking out so vw should be able to do this but numbers are the issue
I was disappointed with VW regarding their diselgate scandal but as a result of that it forced them to go electric quicker. "That's a good thing" to quote Martha Stewart lol
Great show, Kenneth!
Profitability is not comparable — Tesla was ramping up its costs by developing other new vehicles, its Super Charger network, its solar and domestic batteries business — all of which will keep it light years in front of its competitors.
always happy to watch your show , long time vieuwer , have seen the hand-gate show
Hey Ken! It was great meeting you on Thursday! Kinda sad I missed getting a photo with you!
Another great show, Ken! Congratulations on show #20 already! Exciting news about VW's aggressive expansion plans for EVs. I really think their modular platform for various models and various battery packs is an ideal design, preferably with an option to upgrade and replace the original battery packs over time as needs change, and as batteries become more efficient and affordable. It's great to hear about Ecuador's electric bus fleet which will reduce particulate pollution and smog along with greenhouse gasses, while giving riders a taste of the EV experience and thereby encouraging more interest in electric cars, bikes and so on. The cost savings over time will likely inspire other cities and countries to convert their bus and taxi fleets over to cleaner options. Hopefully Honda and Toyota launch full EVs soon, the Honda Urban EV concept seems like a great basic vehicle, and apparently they're planning to sell them in Europe next year.
Nice i love Ev Good question Good drive cars out More Plan cars Evs
I think a KEY fact is being missed here. Tesla got into the electric vehicle business because Elon wanted to change the world for the better. Many of their customers appreciated his vision and supported it with their wallets and loyalty, especially since Tesla not only made electric cars. They made electric cars "Desirable" with Good Looks, Tremendous Aerodynamics (hence efficiency) Long Range, Great Performance, and an accessible Charging Network.
It would be hard to imagine VW has ANY such vision or consideration for making the world a better place, eg DieselGate and poisoning monkeys. They're simply doing this to save the greedy asses! Elon doesn't even take a salary!
So now that Tesla is making profits, people and SUPPOSED knowledgeable analysts especially, think the entrenched automakers are going to come along and eat Tesla's lunch. We saw how effective GM was at that with their Bolt, whose sales are now tanking since the Model 3 deliveries have started. The SK Innovation Battery Plant VW is trying to work with isn't even scheduled to START volume battery production for another 2 years. Meanwhile, those same analysts seem to think Tesla will be doing NOTHING to innovate going forward, thus allowing competitors to surpass them. Based on the lousy efficiency of the the Jaguar I-Pace, they're apparently not even catching up.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I do not own a Tesla nor am I a Tesla "Fan Boy". But I do recognize disruption when I see it.
VW actually issued a correction, the press misheard. they actually intend on producing 15 000 000 electric (electrified?) cars, at some point.
Great show Ken as always. Also good on you for your shout out to Trevor. Was super disappointed to see he didn’t name you in that thank you video given all you did for model 3 owners club. You made great contributions there which didn’t go unnoticed by us viewers. Always have loved both your and Trevor’s content and love your solo stuff here as EV Revolution Show. Keep up the good work Ken!!
Agree with your take on VW — exciting developments!
The Jaguar i-Pace looks appropriately cat-like. Very slightly futuristic. One of the better designs out there I guess… Almost great?
so ipace is already looking to be 1/6 of jaguars sales..>> so are they going to dump the other crappers? sport versions and sedan versions will only sell even better
Hi KenThe Ipace that James and Kate reviewed was my Car, a great car, range not great but ok for me,thanks from the UK
385km of range for the e-Niro? Is it the EPA range or the european standard (WLTP I think)?
Saga is a no-no in the UK… Saga is a company that specialises in holidays and insurance for mainly senior citizens… Not a very good market space for a modern high tec car…
By the time the traditional automakers migrate to EV, it may be too late… The next disruption will be in HOW we use cars — not whether we OWN them. It already makes economic sense to use "ride hailing" rather than use your own car (if you have one)… Hence the rapid rise of Uber, Lyft and others like them. When autonomous cars become ubiquitous, it will be FAR EASIER to just call up some TRANSPORT on your smartphone app, and in a couple of minutes, a car (probably without a driver) will be outside your door waiting to take you where you need to go. This will be anywhere 10X and 20X CHEAPER than owning your own car, and will be just as convenient. So car OWNERSHIP by private households will decrease rapidly and substantially.
All the while the traditional automakers see CAR as the product, they are on a hiding to nothing. The product will be TRANSPORT. People have cars because they need TRANSPORT, and when transport becomes so easy and extremely cheap through ride-hailing, people will just not own private cars any more. Tesla is the ONLY automaker currently planning for this future. They announced plans to get into the business of ride-hailing (selling TRANSPORT) and will incentivise Tesla owners by partnering with them to facilitate this. So if you own a Tesla, it could be a source of income for you.
Think of the airline business… When you fly American Airlines, Virgin or any other, you pay scant attention to the vehicle they are using. It could be a Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, Cessna, Embraer… who cares…? The BRAND you are buying is the airline, not the airplane, and you are buying a TRANSPORT service — not the plane itself. The same will happen in the car industry. Most sales will either be to fleet owners, who like airlines will sell the TRANSPORT these cars offer, or the automakers themselves. Tesla is already setting up for this.
The traditional automakers will end up trying to introduce their fancy EV's right at the point in time when private consumers will no longer need or want them.
What is going on with all 'I think', 'correct me if I'm wrong' etc.? Do your homework properly before you will publish, otherway this looks like grade school student report.
Thanks for another great show, Ken !
Just been to a showroom in the centre of Amsterdam to look at and touch the Model 3. It was a nice, customer friendly visit and an opportunity for us to see the car in the flesh as we are waiting for it from april 3rd 2016 already. Although it was only a brief visit (there was no time to get to the details in depth), it was a nice experience to sit behind the wheel, touch the tablet, feel the interior and look through the glass roof. No testdrive yet possible, we were told. But certainly in the near future we will be able to do so. We are very much so looking forward to that moment.
Like the Saga.
(However, Saga is the name for an "over 50's" insurance / travel / and services company in the UK)
Brand image issue?
A report regarding the VW naming protocol via EV news daily (UK site….. Very good!)
VW have apparently registered the names id1 to id9.
The show presenter (Martyn Lee) mentioned a comment from one of his listeners that the VW prototype name "neo" is an anagram of…… One.
Suddenly all becomes clear!
There was (I believe) a correction after the VW announcement.
It's 15 (fifteen) million vehicles, not 50.
Nice show. I like the fact that the show is focussed on the elimination of those “tail pipes” Kudos to you.
