Your videos are great, if I lived in the us I would look up the possibility of becoming a student.
Got any tips on my 2stroke dt125. It wants to stall from standstill first gear when pulling away without choke. When choke is out it runs fine and i can keep choke on all speeds. Not getting enough fuel?
great tip! did not know that and I had wondered about the seam
You saved my arse with the direction of the copper gasket! Thank you!
you answered to ? I was embarrassed to ask thanks
I'm not against this the only thing I think about is how it's going to crush on the crack side to the muffler my thought was it wouldn't catch both ends and fold in half or only crush one side and it not have full gasket crushed once again just a thought
Thanks. I made a mistake and got 2 pairs of gaskets. Good thing I did. Your video helped me.
Do i literally put the gaskets in and bolt it up or do i have to do anything special like leave the bike running before tightening fully or anything?
That's awesome!!..Love watching your videos Shane!!
So important. Good info
Pro-tip for sure. Thanks, Shane. Your videos are really helpful.
Excellent,' thanks — Mick
Love this channel! Just did a full rebuild of my son's 2005 kx100 with confidence gained from watching this channel. Went smooth as butter and runs like a champ. I actually took the exhaust back off and switched this copper gasket around right after watching this video. Didn't even notice one side was flat. My factory service manual also shows nothing about it. Great knowledgeable videos! SHANE ROCKS!
thanks! yea no repair manuals say that shit
thank you my friend. This is exactly what I was looking!
Working on a GL1100 restoration and could not find this information in the factory repair manual. I actually hadn't noticed the lip until after I mocked up one side. So glad I hadn't torque the header down yet. Sure enough one was correct the other was not. Your explanation/logic behind the correct installation is spot on to me. Thank you! absolutely fantastic information.
now I get why my slip on exhaust is burnt smoked.. I didn't find it that much important but now I kind of do.. for a pit bike SSR 125
Thank you!
Surprisingly, mine didn't have any in/on it to start with despite the fact that they are shown on parts schematics. Additionally, the OEM gaskets I ordered don't seem to have a flat side (I'll have to check a bit more closely).
really hard to find info for change exhaust gasket.
my english bad but i understood with gesticulation explained .
thank you!
On my wife's 400ex it's really difficult to get the gasket in to the port. It will only go in about 1/4 to halfway in. I tried to put the exhaust in thinking that it would push the gasket in to place but it leaked.
Cool thanks
I believe it is the opposite. I put the flat side out, here is why: the flat side matches the diameter of the pipe, the pipe pushes the gasket and the other side of the gasket will be pressed on the cylinder head surface and expands on it taking the shape of the gasket seat. It expands outwards though, when the same time the flat surface (which seems to cover also the internal diameter of the gasket) will prevent the gasket expand inwards as it seems harder material… Basically it's all about expanding outwards mostly. The bike sounds so sweet, if I am wrong I will let you know in a couple of months maybe…? I took a small risk as the bike does not have much life left with me, so I took the risk for you.
do aftermarket pipes such as the FMF fatty also use the brass gasket thanks
Hello Shane , I have a 1986 VFR 750 which has an exhaust lead at the manifold , could this cause a lake of power ? Thank you.
By “flat side” do you mean the smooth side/unseamed side? Your terms are confusing. Thanks!
Hello, just put new header on my bike and bought new gaskets from Honda. The gaskets were round and one side had that little seam thing that u feel with ur finger nail. I put that part in facing the exhaust port. Is that bad?
Mine didn't have a flat side…. It was completely round ring… It wouldn't matter anyways because, if you look at the old ones they're totally crushed flat from the factory, they're crush gaskets that flatten out when the MM torque spec is applied. So once you torque them down they crush out anyways and go flat. That's how they seal and make a good fit is by crushing down to make up for any small differences between the head and header pipe and provide positive contact between both. So which direction isn't going to matter if the thing looks like a pancake when you're done anyways…
