Applies to 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 Accords. Maybe other cars as well. Read the codes for your CEL (MIL) — nothing other than a paper clip needed.

lol.. I don't know anything about cars, but how does a paper clip determine what code you need to diagnose your check engine problem? And how does the blinking light tells you what code you need to diagnose your car? My 1998 honda accord check engine light comes on, but I'm too broke to take it to the shop. As soon as I can find a paper clip, I'm def. using this method.. BUT I'm still not convince. I'll probably purchase a scanner..
@lilcrazyaznboy The only thing the paper clip is doing is bridging the electric connection between those two pins. A connection between those two pins tells the car to start blinking error codes if it has any. The actual paper clip isn't doing anything special.
@Spo8 Yah.. Ok. Sure.
@lilcrazyaznboy @Spo8 was correct — the car looks for two connected pins and that tells it, "The user is too cheap to buy a scanner, better blink out the codes for him" ! It's a handy feature.
So, the first blinks should be long blinks and the second number are short blinks. Since there were 9 long blinks and zero short blinks the code is 90. If there were zero long blinks and 9 short blinks the code would be 09 or simply 9. Do I have that right?
YOU GUYS DONT GET IT THIS IS USEFUL IF YOU HAVE A OBD1 ECU FOR A F20B OR H22 SWAP ..CAUSE THE SCANNER WONT WORK
Lol I swear we all get that evap code 1497 I think
Saved me time, money, and god knows what, last forum I used has no pictures for the OP anymore and I couldn't remember the pins to jump. 02 Accord SE
Long blinks count as 10 units. Short blinks count as 1 unit. There were 9 long blinks so the number is 90 or 9×10. He said zero short blinks because there were no short blinks. had there been say two short blinks after the long blinks the number would have totalled 92.
Thanks. Sorry I'm late, wjwjwjr, Esuper1 is correct.
Thanks. Worked for a 2002 Odyssey.
worked for me, only doubt is I too got a error code 90. I simply went to gas station got it full tank and the indicator went off in like 5 mins. thanks for video.
I have this same problem with my accord what did you do to fix the issue?
wheres the pdf of the obd codes for download ?
i got to the point where i shorted the wires and im seeing the code blinked out, just i need something to cross reference what im seeing into an actual code so i know what is wrong, can you post please, or where to find ?
Cool shit
Interesting. How did you know the code is 90 and not just 9?
If it was just 9, the blinks would have been way shorter.
I got a 98 accord too but my light isn't on, but my maintenance light is…. How do I diagnose that?? Is it the same or no
My engine light isn't on but my maintenance light is
Haha, yea I figured that out reading the forum that you leaked. Strangely, my car has the same problem yours has, but the issue that is scaring me is my car has trouble accelerating. Do you have this trouble?
I didn't have that issue. Make sure it is the only code showing up. This code should just impact emissions, not performance.
Maintenance light turns on every few miles, to let you know you need to change the oil. Check the manual for reset, but don't reset without changing the oil.
Why take the chance of shorting out your ECU when you can get an app for your phone to do these. I use my Android phone anything my CEL comes out to check it.
Well, at the time I didn't have an Android phone. Plus the little adapter cost a lot more than a paper clip.
I let it sit for a solid minute and it just played the same code over and over which seems to be 09.
Okay I understand that but still. These cars have enough issues i.e. tranny issue is what I am looking at right at 116,000 miles.
I don't feel like there's much need to spend the money on anything, when this costs $0 and has been done by dozens of people on 6ga forums with no problems. On 6ga there is also a tip about what fuse to pull to reset the light without disconnecting the radio. I don't own this car anymore so I don't know off the top of my head which fuse. I wanna say it's passenger #11 but my memory is fuzzy haha
Get a Obdπ Reader.
When I turn the key over in my Accord (not start it) there are 3 lights that come on. The battery, oil, and srs light. They don't come on though when I start my car. Do you know if that is normal? I feel like it is because I've seen some other videos with the same lights on! Thanks!
If they turn off when the engine is running, everything is fine.
Okay, thank you!
How would you know which wire to connect the paper clip too. Is it the same on all cars or different.
Hey bud, i just tried to diagnose my Accord multiple times by short circuiting, and it exactly turned out to be the same error you just showed in the video; 9 0 = there could be two problems as defined in the chart, just a silly question; does this really work? just can't belief haha. Thanks
that paper clip shit works! saved me like 60 bucks to get it scanned!
Good work. I am using Kia Sportage 1998 and engine light is on. Is there anyway of reading codes manually just like this. Please help.
Thanks mine also has 9 long blinks and mine is 2001.
If you put the wire in the wrong sockets, you will short out several fuses and the car won't start. If after you do this, the car fails to start check the fuse box.
Hey how did you fix your problem I have the same code
Hey I don't have the brown wire in my plug, help
I did the same on my Honda accord LX 98 which has the check engine light on, but it doesn't work, it blinks 10 times and stops, just the same as without the jumper, any idea why? It does not even work with OBDII scanner, why? please help. Thanks
WARNING, BECAREFUL!!!! I used this method on my Honda accord LX 98 and it didn't work, but next day when I tried to start the car , it did not start. I changed my main relay and it didn't help, and I tried so many other things with no luck. Finally I found out that the 15 amp fuse of ACGS which is located in the fuse box under the hood is bad, I changed it and the car started.
my engine light for my 2000 is not working
I will take a look and try that now
Does this also work for diagnosing the ABS light?
Where is the list that tells you how many flashes equal what code?
If your car stalls and shuts off and check engine light comes on it doesn't matter how many times you rest the cod your problem is not going to go away, just replaced the EGR Valve guys, don't stress yourselves. I learned the hard way after spending $700 on repairs. It could be one or two of the coils too, but if you have an older Accord from 98 to 04 it's time to replace the EGR valve. Don't clean it's not expensive and takes about twenty minutes to replace it. You will be a lot happier and proud of yourself.
If you are a handy person, then do some research on Youtube most of the problems you can fix you self. In my opinion Youtube is one of the best inventions of recent years specially for Handymen. Here people can exchange ideas, help each other and feel good afterwards in the process.
Bought a vehicle Honda accord 2002 from SJB Auto Sales, LLC that is registered at 819 N College Ave Unit I127. The name of the person who sold me the car is Mohamed Yusuf (goes by Mike). The transmission of the car was messed up. Basically, Mohamed Yusuf from SJB Auto Sales, LLC sold me a lemon. Avoid this asshole and this company at all cost!
