The company’s pilot plant, which is operated by German startup Sunfire in Dresden, produced its first batches of the «e-diesel» this month. German Federal Minister of Education and Research Johanna Wanka put a few liters of the fuel in her work car, an Audi A8, to commemorate the accomplishment.
The base fuel is referred to as «blue crude,» and begins by taking electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar or hydropower and using it to produce hydrogen from water via reversible electrolysis. The hydrogen is then mixed with CO2 that has been converted into CO in two chemical processes and the resulting reactions produce a liquid made from long-chain hydrocarbons – this is blue crude, which is then refined to create the end product, the synthetic e-diesel….

I have been thinking about something like this for a while yet had not been able to find it till now and I am happy to see that I am not alone in wanting to see a better future for upcoming generation.
can this fuel be used in electric vehicle fuel cells?
yeah, but as long as the cost to make it per gallon is more than what a gallon of gas can sell for, this will not work out. No profit= no business
So instead of using up our oil, with this method we have to use up our water? Water is quite a precious resource, I'm not sure this is very sensible…
I hope you can use sea water …. or else its a bad idea lol . well for a moment is good but when we gona run out water then what?NESTLE gona sell their water for a gold price XD
Independent engineers had discovered this years ago, but it'll be interesting if a major brand, such as Audi, faces similar intimidation and attempted shutdowns, or if the "recipe" will be stolen to prevent the oil industry complex going out of business.
I bet sunfire would be happy to help audi buy a share in statoil, and sell their fuel as an eco alternative, at gasstations…. to go along with a sticker, when your driving your SUV, many would pay double price, to help boost this eco fuel 🙂
It is great news and it is academically cool, but by simple physics the process of making the fuel and burning the fuel is far less efficient than just using the electricity used to produce the fuel itself to propel the vehicles. And at the rate electric cars and batteries / super-capacitors are advancing I doubt that this technology will survive longer than a decade or even if it will be commercialized on a large scale
