Car New | New Volkswagen T-Roc revealed
A Volkswagen Golf-based SUV called the T-Roc is set to join the German manufacturers’ range next year – and our images show how it could look.
The 2017 Volkswagen T-Roc is designed to sit beneath the larger Volkswagen Tiguan in the brand’s SUV range, and will be officially revealed this summer, before going on sale at the end of 2017. It’s essentially an alternative to the Audi Q2 and will compete with that car as well as cheaper SUVs like the Nissan Juke and (likely to be) more expensive models like the BMW X1 and MINI Countryman.
2017 Volkswagen T-Roc design.
As you can see in our exclusive renders, the T-Roc should feature VW’s new corporate grille, which premiered on the recently unveiled Arteon. The T-Roc is likely to be reasonably conservative aside from that though, with Golf-esque lines made butcher and more pronounced to emphasise its raised height, and cement its SUV status.
You may be asking why Volkswagen needs another SUV, with the Tiguan being a fairly common sight and popular choice and the Touareg catering for those after a large 4×4. Well, given Audi already either builds or has plans to build a range of seven SUVs from Q2 through to Q8, and BMW offers (or is soon to offer) SUVs from X1 to X7 inclusive, Volkswagen’s twin SUV line-up is looking a little measly.
2017 Volkswagen T-Roc price and on-sale date.
Volkswagen’s broad pricing means entry-level T-Rocs will probably cost roughly the same as the SEAT Ateca, with plusher models pushing into Audi Q2 territory and beyond. Expect four-wheel drive to be offered with the more powerful engines, a manual gearbox to be standard and the obligatory DSG dual-clutch automatic to be optional throughout the range. Current and future automotive trends mean a petrol-electric hybrid option is likely, too.
The T-Roc is the first of a range of new VW SUVs set to launch over the next 18 months or so.
