Car New | First Look: 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan gets bigger, smarter, and faster to suit American tastes
The current Volkswagen Tiguan, while still presenting a stylish European option with fun driving dynamics, suffered from one major flaw: size, or lack thereof.
For the 2018 model year, Volkswagen seems to have listened to the car-buying public, not only rolling out an all-new midsize crossover called the Atlas, but making their smaller option more American-sized. With 10.7 more inches on the current model in length and up to 57 percent more cargo capacity, there’s a lot more to like about the Tiguan this time around.
Those privvy to Volkswagen models will notice that the new Tiguan has already been released in Europe, but there’s a very good reason it’s just now making its way to our shores: more space.
The 2018 Tiguan has been fully redesigned using Volkswagen’s MQB modular architecture that underpins the current Golf variations and will be used in all future Volkswagens, including the massive Atlas. In addition to the length increase over the previous model, the American Tiguan has a 4.4-inch longer wheelbase than its European counterpart, and is lower and wider than before.
If there was one complaint about the current Tiguan’s styling, its that when all is said and done, its a bit to tall and stubby. But for 2018, those characteristics are long gone, as the new model is lower, wider, and sharper than before, and looks quite a lot like a miniature Audi Q5.
Inside, the Tiguan looks luxury car-esque, with handsome black soft touch materials and a prominent central touchscreen that dominates the dash. Volkswagen has always been a cut above in terms of fit and finish among its economy brand counterparts, and the 2018 Tiguan looks to be more of the same, with sharp, handsome lines and a variety of interior materials, including light leather and faux metal and carbon fiber accents.
