Car New | 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance Plug-in Hybrid Heads For Detroit Auto Show
BMW, keeping with its goal to have an electrified version of every one of its model by 2021, will show the new 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance Plug-in Hybrid at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Borrowing the drivetrain from the 530e iPerformance, the 5 Series plug-in hybrid pairs a 180 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 95 horsepower electric motor.
Combined, the two power sources produce 240 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. That’s enough output to propel the mid-size plug-in hybrid to 60 mph in just over six seconds, BMW says.
Electricity for the motor is provided by a 9.2-kilowatt-hour battery pack located beneath the rear seat, that BMW points out, keeps the cargo space intact with a flat-load floor.
Battery charge time is under seven hours using a standard 120-volt outlet, while a 240-volt BMW Charging Station cuts that time down to less than three hours.
The 530e iPerformance is BMW’s first plug-in hybrid that will be offered with either rear- or all-wheel drive.
There are three driving modes—Auto eDrive, Max eDrive, and Battery Control—that allow the driver to manage how electric power is used.
Auto eDrive automatically manages the flow of power between the gasoline engine and the electric motor to best suit driving conditions.
Max eDrive turns the 530e iPerformance into a true electric vehicle that the Bavarian automaker estimates will have a real-world electric-only driving range of 15 miles.
Battery Control mode is designed to hold the battery pack charge for future use, an important European feature as urban areas are beginning to plan the restricted use of internal combustion engine in city centers.
The 530e will be available with many of the safety and technology features found in other 5-Series models, including both adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning and optional gesture control.
