Busaru.com — I found that the brake booster was leaking brake fluid into the engine intake and causing white smoke. I go through taking out the dead brake booster, master cylinder, and a brake line that broke through the process. This is a fairly straightforward swap out of dead parts for new, so this video isn’t really a step-by-step but it goes through the general process. I hope it helps someone having this problem!

Hey quick question for you. I've replaced all the brakes, calipers, wheel cylinders on my 79 Westie but the brakes still are hard to push. They stop really well but you have to use more force than a normal vehicle. I checked for vacuum leaks in the line going to the brake booster and there were no leaks. I'm getting good vacuum at the booster. The check valve was bad so I replaced that and it didn't really improve the brakes. My question is whether or not replacing the brake booster and master cylinder will fix my issue or if this is just how the brakes will be even if I replaced those. Thanks
Hey Bro… BJ here… again. Just wondering what your take on DOT 5 brake fluid would be? My brake booster died (busted diaphragm) so I am replacing it with a brake booster and master cylinder from a Westphalia. Also replacing front brake pads and rear brake shoes after re-building the front calipers and rear brake cylinders. I am running 17" Sliderz rims all around with P225-50's on the front and P225-70's on the rear (MUCH cheaper than a freeway flyer transmission). I got the parts off of a Westphalia mainly because Westie's are a lot heavier than my 84 Vanagon L, so my thinking is the master cylinder and brake booster would be a little more "stout". Which brings me to the brake fluid. I know that DOT 5 has a higher temperature rating, but have heard bad things about silicone based fluids and rubber o-rings. So… what are your thoughts?? The manual calls for DOT 3, but I doubt DOT 5 was invented when the manual was written… and stopping my Vanagon (quickly) at highway speeds can get just a tad hairy sometimes.
oh yeah… I would LOVE to switch the rear brakes from shoes to pads… any suggestions on a suitable donor vehicle for the rear disc brake swap??
