Hello Everyone, Welcome back to the channel.

In this video I am going to tackle a small job that I want to carry out on my BMW E82 1 Series 123d.

A water pump and thermostat replacement. As you will see it is a fairly straightforward process and can be easily achieved with regular hand tools.

As I stated in the video, I have only ever broken down twice in my entire driving career and on both occasions it was caused by BMW water pump failure. Now I prefer to replace them periodically as a purely preventative measure to ensure that I avoid a potential breakdown.

The cost of the parts is not that high and all can be bought for less than £100.

The water pump that I fitted can be found at the link below:

The thermostat that I fitted can be found at the link below:

The thermostat gasket that I fitted can be found at the link below:

All links to products are affiliate links for which I will receive a small commission on any purchase made, at no additional cost to you.

I hope that you enjoyed this video.

  1. I have a 118d, 2009 model N47 with 210k miles on, which is now making a rattly gravelly type noise, water pump pully has slight wobble as well. Autodoc basket full of required parts and pressed go, hopefully doing job next few weeks, weather permitting? Thankyou to your post and others spreading wider knowledge enabling us to look after our old BM's keeping them on the road for more miles..

  2. Completed this task last weekend, recommend taking the EGR/cooler off, leave the wires attach as it can be lifted and placed on top of engine, 5 fixings and 2 small water pipes with o-rings link to the head which just pop out. Removal leaves better access to work on waterpump.

  3. 1000 excuses, can't you first let the cooling water out completely and then remove it? Or was that a spontaneous decision? Can you also name all the things after your experience, such as the hot seals, bolts if you still need them as a reserve?

  4. TIP to anyone watching… the top left bolt is blocked by the EGR spring (which he said is missing on this car in vid) as is righttt in front of the top left bolt on water pump. You need to GET to it with your 10mm shortest socket on the LEFT hand side of the spring, to get to this bolt. You need to LOOK at it though from the RIGHT side with a torch. Socket won't go on fully so will take patience! Once it's loosened, you need to remove the socket first then remove this bolt by hand (as the Spring is too close to remove the bolt and socket together). TIP…before evening starting the job, remove this bolt first! Because if you can't for any reason and give up, least you don't have to put everything else back to drive to the garage!
