Out for a drive with a Yi 4K+ camera to try to catch the noise my M140i has been making.
Does anyone know if it’s normal or not for the ZF 8HP50 box to whine? I’ve heard conflicting stories everywhere. I just want a sound, well supported, engineering account of why they do or don’t whine please. 0:48 for the start of the whining noise in the video. I’ll get a better quality clip on soon. This was uploaded from my phone.
Thanks in advance 👍

Anyone who is watching have any ideas why it may have started whining, mostly in 4th? Please leave comments, thank you.
It's a known issue. Gearbox whine can be addressed by your local dealer though. Have a look on the forum babybmw. Lots of m135 owners with this issue and a few 140 owners too.
Check out my videos's. Mines much worse and apparent. But classed as a "normal" sound with BMW. I'm not convinced. Yours sounds like the dealer car I Road Tested.
Did you ever get this sorted? I've re-listened to your video and I can hear the sound, same as mine (not as loud but that could be the recording) and it appears to get louder around the 1:40 mark as in through use/heat build?
I'm having a real fight with BMW over it.
My 435i is making similar whining noise, only in 8th gear when I release gas pedal at around 2000 rpm. So far didn't notice any issue other than the noise. Have scheduled an appointment with dealer next week to have the car checked.
Hey did you ever find out the issue? I’m having the exact same problem
So…..I'm a lazy b and I never did go back to BMW. I can't trust anyone else to work on the drivetrain except myself. But on a positive note I have a bit more feedback after owning the M140i for over 2 years now. The whining noise only happens when I leave it in the same gear I just used for hard acceleration, whilst coasting. If I change down, it's usually OK, if I change up, well, I can't remember what happens to the noise because I just get overwhelmed with the B58's sound and pull 🙂
