BMW E61 5 Series Boot / Tail Gate Window Manual Release & FIX
How to open the rear boot window and my fix for it. watch the end of the video to see.
1. Access the Interior of the Tailgate:
You’ll need to get inside the car and access the tailgate from the inside. This might involve folding down the rear seats to create enough space.
2. Locate the Manual Release Mechanism:
On the inside of the tailgate, near the bottom edge, you should find a small plastic cover. It’s usually rectangular or slightly triangular in shape.
This cover conceals the manual release mechanism.
3. Open the Cover:
You can usually pry this cover open with a small flat-head screwdriver or a similar tool. Be gentle to avoid damaging the plastic.
4. Activate the Release Lever:
Once the cover is off, you’ll see a small lever or tab.
Push or pull this lever in the appropriate direction (it usually moves sideways) to manually release the tailgate window latch.
Important Notes:
Variations: While the general principle is the same, there might be slight variations in the design or location of the release mechanism depending on the specific model year or trim level of your E61.
Check for Obstructions: Before attempting to open the window, make sure there are no obstructions (like cargo) preventing it from opening.
Electrical Issues: If the electric release isn’t working, there might be an electrical problem with the tailgate wiring or the release mechanism itself. It’s worth investigating this issue further to prevent future problems.
If you’re having trouble finding the manual release or if it’s not working, it’s best to consult a local service center or a qualified mechanic. They can diagnose any underlying issues and ensure the tailgate window is functioning correctly.

Ah result. Will check my fuse first then before anything else
Can’t find the bolt
Can you give more details of the bolt to push forward really struggling finding it
Thanks for the video ! Help me a lot
So I can just change the fuse out
I just took fuse 55 out and my glass rear hatch still works perfectly. So I think it must be a different fuse. If you know please do share as I need to disable my hatch!!
Thanks for the video — really helped get mine done today. My fuse was fine so the switch was definitely the issue. I've got no skin left on my left arm from reaching that bolt but it's sorted now 🙂
Thanks for the tip.
