Posting this video to show the noise coming from my wheel bearing. Car is a 1999 BMW 328i sedan, E46 model, manual transmission.
I originally thought this noise was coming from the differential, but it was actually the right rear wheel bearing.
If you notice around the :30 second mark, I turn the wheel to the left a bit. Every time I turn the wheel to the left, the sound goes away. Otherwise, it is extremely loud all the time — louder than the engine, even with my Conforti cold air intake.

Hi
I have a similar noise in my 93 325i with a LSD differential. Do you know if the whole diff has to be changed to get rid off this noise?
Was it the Diff?
There is a good chance it is due to the rear differential diff bushings. They failed quite common on E46 328is and other early E46s like 330ds with a lot of torque.
Did you ever find out what was causing the noise?
I had this exact samen noise from mye E36, it wasn't the diff but a faulty wheel bearing
My diff is gone but it doesnt sound at all like that..
That sounds like wheel bearing or a very worn CV. Especially as it goes when you turn left. The weight lifting off the wheel might be causing that…
Does it have a limited slip? That said, The vid is old now so i guess you sorted it ok?
I had exactly the same noise on my bmw e90 the noise would go away everytime i would turn right but not left :/ Took it to my garage today it was rear right bearing. My mechanic changed it for 300 dollars and its back to being smooth…
I should've added! It wasn't the diff at all… Haha. It was a wheel bearing. Sorry!
thanks for posting this. i have same thing on my E90 but not as loud. yet. now to figure out which bearing is going.
