Update: I found the fix for this issue. It’s actually related to the tail light harness. Check your tail light harness for the brown ground wire contact to be melted & burned out. This is a known issue with the harness, and can be fixed with a harness repair kit from Bavauto.
Recently my E46’s HIDs started flickering. They are OEM HIDs, and are the original units that came with the car. Both sides always flash together, never one side or the other. It happens whether the car’s engine is running or not. If the brake pedal is pushed, they start flashing steadily about once a second. In any other circumstance it’s sporatic.

Thanks in advance for any advice on a fix!

hi did you fix yours?i have the same ….
How much Is the bavauto kit. To repair the harness for it?
Try removing your bulbs on your tail lights and just putting them back on
I'll leave them flickering as it looks like a cop car in the rear view mirror
The solution is the rear bulb carries and plugs. The are usually damaged with time.
Also this will fix your rapid blinking signal lights issues.
I am using the video of the ground wire in the taillight assembly to fix the problem…will update on if it works. The light on the dash also shows that a taillight is out but it is not. Definitely believe it's a ground wire problem!
i have this problem, time to fix LOL
opening the trunk , the right side has a rubber tube, there are wires that are disconnected or short-circuited , for me that was the reason
get the ground wire on both tail lights
the grand
Ok so my girlfriend purchased a 2001 BMW 330ci convertible and a year later (3-4 weeks ago) both headlights started flickering and the driver side rear brake light panel also went out. So after calling up the dealership and reading around, I found a fix that seems to work (thx to google and youtube). I opened up the rear tail light panel and disconnected the connect wiring harness. I saw that the grounding wire (brown) appeared to be scorched so I cut the brown wire, cut the metal portion where it would connect to on the circuit plate and spliced a new connecting piece to it. I placed shrink tubing around the newly spliced wire and connected/crimped the new connecting piece to the cut plate. It works for now and I will test it again tonight to see if it is a complete fix. Thanks for all the input from everyone that had the same problem and hope this helps. Now she can go about driving her BMW convertible and I get to go back to the almighty Corolla lol.
oh my goodness, I own a E90 — 2011 bmw 328i Xdrive and my car is doing the same thing …..for the past two weeks my headlights intermittently flickers …its driving me crazy ……my car does not have projection headlights, they are halogen …so at the moment I purchased hid kit and installed it ….it was working great for the past 3 months and suddenly it does this flicker crap ….its so annoying ….i need to try and fix it ….asap .. THE LIGHTS FLICKER AT THE SAME TIME, NOT INDEPENDENTLY …
my e38 has this ,grab your head light switch and stick it in between park and low beam and youll see them work again replace your switch
on my car all the lights go off everything interior park and headlights cool at night cars in front of me think im a cop,,lol but then i play with the swich and bam it works again
if it was a grounding issue this woul not happen and u would get a code for it since all the circuits travel through the bus line,,,can bus to the regular folks
So if only one flickers it's likely the ballast? Also to note, the color is different between the two.
man i thought this was gonna cost me, brake light died then the turn signal started going off super quick then the head lights started to flicker, lol, been 2 months iv owned it!! thought id have to hit up bmw and get ripped off but nah, thanks!
problem comes from rear tail lights. seems crazy. but the headlights are tied into rear tail lights. unplug each tail light and look for bad contact on the wiring harness that goes into tail lights.
Just kidding change out your lights back to factory spec or look up how to do the complete HID Mod
