A strange metalic clapping noise coming from the cylinder head. No broken rockers. Not just the valves clapping. Sounds like a diesel engine.

did you ever figure out what was going on? mine sounds similar.
Not really but I did change the spark plugs, cables dist. cap and rotor, adjusted the ignition and the sound went away. So I guess it was faulty ignition. You shold check these parts and see if they meet up with their specs,
why do alot of bmw e30's sound like this lol, mine makes this too sometimes.
@LtColQwerty valve adjustment..
@icc0rz okay that noise.. the one that sounds like a school bus or deisel engine? thats called Pre-Ignition… happens when your timing is advanced too far, results in engine knock and all kinds of nasty stuff, the piston is trying to push up while the charge is detonating… resulting in the crank shaft pushing the piston up, while the charge being detonated is pushing it down… you loose all kinds of crazy power
Try using better fuel and setting ignition timing, let me know 🙂
is the timing good?
mayby a pare of tooth wrong from the timing belt.
or a bad camshaft.
you need to adjust the valve clearance spaces, m20 and m 30 engines needs to do this every 2 or 3 oil changes, about 20.000 or 30.000 km. The valve spaces are adjustable in the cylinder head with rocker arm bolts, spaces should be 0.25 mm and after this done it will work like a clock
Valve adjustment. What grade of oil are you using? 15W40 or 20W50? If you are running anything else, its too thin for an M20 engine. 15W40 gives you the best all climate range. These engines run the Motronic ignition where the computer control fuel, idle speed and timing, and adjust all to compensate for the engines condition and operating state.
Hey my bmw 325e sounds the same but i never pay attention to it because since i buy it has the same power perfomance ..but i think its a valve adjustment..
Check the belt timing. sounds like 1 tooth of timing
Check your valve clearance before doing anything e30 engines are known for this problem but in the m40 it's because the hydraulic lifters are not receiving the proper oil but it's the same thing as the valves being out of adjustment
