Sounds like an exhaust leak. Anyhow shaking could be the MAF. Unplug the MAF and start it, otherwise could be a vacuum leak. Also make sure there is adequate tension on the belt. Could be loose. Post up on BimmerForums in E39 they'll help you out
My car is doing the same what was the problem
the timing chain guides need to be replaced….. same thing happened to me when i got my 97 540it.
did u find out what it was
What was it
Its your chain guides. I just replaced my chain guides myself becuase it sounded just like that. The way to verify if its the guides is drop your oil pan down (like 20 screws) and you'll see lots of pieces of plastic in there. What happens is the main chain is like 8 feet long and probably 60% of that chain distance rides on plastic lined guides… after alot of heat cycles (starting the engine and it warming up, then cooling down) the plastic will become more brittle and eventually break.
When the chain guides break the chain has alot of freedom to move around and alter the timing some. If you do it soon, you won't bend any valves. talk to the guys at EAU motorsports, they'll sell you the parts (about $600 in parts) then rent the special tools from bimmertools and from them you can print out step by step instructions to do the repair. also change the oil separator valve while youre in there as well as the chain tensioners. That'll fix you right up.
Before you spend a bunch of money on timing chain guides Id check the timing chain tensioners in both sides. Sometimes when the spring wears out in the tensioner and your chain will bounce aigainst the inside if ths valve cover and make a ticking sound but if it's been sounding like that might be a good idea to swap out the guides. I had the same thing in my 540 and swapping the springs seemed to do the trick.
THATS THE TIMING CHAIN GUIDES DETROYED. BIG JOB THERE BUDDY.
this is happening to my car what do I do ?
