alcohol awareness month

Some of the ways the NCADD has made it possible to fight alcoholism is by launching personalized campaigns every year, Alcohol-Free-Weekend encouraging abstinence, and seeking help for someone if they are unable to. The D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and Know Your Limits campaigns have also instilled much-needed information about the harmful effects of alcohol consumption in children from an early age. Marty Mann founded the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). She was one of the early members of Alcoholics Anonymous and the first woman to have successfully gone through a 12-step group. She founded NCADD to help people like her get counseled and treated for alcoholism and dedicated this group to key medical and scientific research for the community. Two years ago, we found about 24.6 percent of 14- to 15-year-olds reported having at least 1 drink.

TOOLKIT: Alcohol Awareness Month

The cause tackles many challenges, including health problems, mental health struggles, strained relationships, and financial hardships from alcohol misuse. Long-term, excessive drinking of alcohol can gravely affect your health and leads to chronic diseases including high blood pressure, liver disease, digestive problems, and even cancer. Since its inception in 1987, National Alcohol Awareness Month has saved many lives from alcohol-related deaths.

Major Initiatives

  1. Take, for example, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol.
  2. Another strong start is to understand your key function as a role model when it comes to alcohol.
  3. Across the globe, countless efforts and initiatives tackle the pressing issue of alcohol misuse.
  4. Furthermore, it can complicate the treatment of other diagnoses, such as bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  5. More than 90 percent of all alcoholic drinks consumed by young people are consumed through binge drinking.
  6. Notably, a vast majority of these deaths involve adults aged 35 and older, emphasizing the widespread impact of excessive alcohol consumption across various demographics.

To test your knowledge, see if you can tell which of the following statements are myths versus facts. Binge drinking is when blood alcohol concentration comes to 0,08 g/dL, which happens when a man drinks five glasses and a woman drinks four in about two hours. Whether you are looking for counseling, peer support groups, accountability, or recovery tools you can pull up on your phone, you have options. Events may aim to raise awareness or funds for rehabilitation centers in their area or to fight the stigma that often comes with addiction. All Americans are encouraged to participate in Alcohol Awareness Month by reflecting on their relationship with alcohol. As I discussed in my previous blog post, NIAAA also has an important new website that can help you navigate the often complicated process of choosing treatment for alcohol problems.

Furthermore, it can complicate the treatment of other diagnoses, such as bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Alcoholism in a patient with one or more of these mental disorders is a complication known as Dual Diagnosis. Prolonged alcohol misuse can lead to persistent memory problems, beyond the periods of intoxication.

Programs for Children and Teens

Efforts to bridge this knowledge gap have gained momentum over the past few years. As a generation that has grown up in a digital age where health information is more accessible than ever, Gen Z appears to be more aware of the adverse effects of alcohol compared to older generations. In December, we’re raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and about the importance of getting a flu vaccine.

The annual observance has facilitated collaborations between diverse organizations, such as government agencies, schools, and community groups. These partnerships have led to the development of numerous educational initiatives and prevention programs, like the Alcohol-Free Weekend, which has significantly impacted countless lives today. If you feel you or a loved one may be struggling with alcoholism, don’t worry, you’re not alone. We understand how overwhelming it can be to consider seeking help for addiction and we’re here to take that burden off your shoulders. Our admissions navigators are available 24/7 to discuss your alcohol addiction treatment options and answer any questions you may have about the process.

Parents and trusted adults can play a meaningful role in shaping youth’s attitudes toward drinking. Learn up-to-date facts and statistics on alcohol consumption and its impact in the United States and globally. Explore topics related to alcohol misuse and treatment, underage drinking, the effects of alcohol on the human body, and more. Alcohol Awareness Month aims to increase public awareness about alcohol and alcohol use disorders (AUDs).

Resources

The NIAAA Alcohol Treatment Navigator can help you recognize and find high quality treatment for alcohol use disorder. If you drink excessively, seek medical help to plan a safe recovery as sudden abstinence can be life threatening. NIAAA’s Rethinking Drinking can help you assess your drinking habits and provides information snorting zolpidem to help you cut back or stop drinking. The month-long campaign kicks off this week with its Alcohol-Free Weekend to raise public awareness about the use of alcohol and how it may be affecting individuals, families, businesses and communities. During Alcohol-Free Weekend, NCADD extends an open invitation to all Americans to engage in three alcohol-free days.

However, along with millennials, they are also more likely than older generations to seek treatment or therapy from mental health professionals. Historically, public awareness of such risks, specifically the links to cancer, has been low. A review of 32 studies across 16 countries found that awareness of alcohol as a cancer risk factor was generally low, with some variation across regions. Each month, ODPHP features select National Health Observances (NHOs) that align with our priorities for improving health across the nation. In November, we are raising awareness about diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and antibiotic safety. You and your community can take steps to improve everyone’s health and quality of life.
